Government troops round up suspected militants in Mogadishu

Government troops on Wednesday conducted a door-to-door search and rounded up a number of people suspected of being members of al Shabaab accused of terrorizing pockets of Mogadishu. Speaking to the media Mogadishu’s central police, Ali Hirsi Barre said they are investigating the suspects who were rounded up during the operation in parts of Hodan and Wadajir districts for their alleged involvement in militancy.

Somali students to study in Turkey

The head of the Turkish religious affairs authority said on Monday that numerous Somali students would be given the opportunity to study in Turkey. Expressing the importance of implementing lasting works in Somalia, Gormez noted that his authority planned activities that would invest in the people of this country.

Hawiye elders say al Shabaab, al Qaeda groups behind Puntland insecurity

Unidentified dead bodies found in parts of Galkayo, Mudug region

Residents of Galkayo town were today shocked after four unidentified dead bodies were found dumped on some parts of Galkayo town, Mudug region.The bodies were found dumped on streets around the Airport and the road connecting Galkayo to other cities in Central Somalia regions.

50 arrested in Garowe security crackdown

The security forces of Somalia’s semi-autonomous region of Puntland have apprehended at least fifty people, mostly traders originating from Bay and Bakol regions of southern Somalia, for possible involvement in the killing of a Puntland security officer and the destabilization the overall security of Garowe.

UAE aid team shares Eid joy with displaced children in Somalia

The Emirati team stationed in Somalia to provide aid to the people there today celebrated Eid al Fitr with the children who were displaced with their families. The team members distributed sweets, toys and other gifts at the Emirati camp for displaced people in Wadgar area. The Emirati camp currently provides meals to over 5,000 displaced people.

Somali deputy prime minister urges African countries to deploy troops in Somalia

Somali Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Security Hussein Arab Issa on Wednesday urged African countries to deploy troops in Somalia to consolidate gains made against al Shabaab. “We ask all African nations to stand and help us. We appeal to all African countries who promised to contribute troops to do so. We are not fighting for ourselves but for the country and the region,” said Issa.

UN: fewer Somalis fleeing homes

The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says 5,000 people have moved into Mogadishu this month, down from 28,000 in July. The agency’s weekly report, issued late Tuesday, says the number of Somalis fleeing to refugee camps in Kenya and Ethiopia has also dropped.

Agency identifies 23,000 IDP shelters in Mogadishu

A UN agency’s satellite-based analysis of the shelters housing IDPs in Mogadishu identified at least 23,000 such structures. According to UNOSAT, the analysis was based on imagery recorded in late July 2011. At least 188 spatially distinct IDP shelter concentrations were identified within the city, covering an area of approximately 176 hectares, with the two largest in Wadajir and Dharkelynley, both in Medina district.

Three things stood out for me in the discussion with the President at Nakasero State Lodge on Sunday evening before I flew back to Toronto. Foremost, it was revealing how deeply he felt about the mission in Somalia. He clearly was not worried about failure, pointing out that the Uganda and Burundi contingents were professional, mindful and respectful in their working relationships with the people of Somalia.
