Somali president meets Dutch Minister for Development Cooperation

The President of the Republic of Somalia Sharif Sheikh Ahmed met with the Dutch minister for development cooperation Ben Knapen and his delegation at his office in Villa Somalia today. The President emphasized the importance of development along side security improvement: “we must provide vital services such as electricity, water, re-establishing schools, hospitals and rebuilding roads and other important infrastructures”.
Security operation: several suspects arrested in Yakshid

The local administration in Yaksheed District of the Banadir region has today transferred several suspects to the Somali military court after the men were found responsible of creating insecurity in the Yakshiid district Security forces that were busy patrolling the district in the south eastern part of the capital seized the men in Ba’ad market as a part of the ongoing operations meant to free Mogadishu from armed groups.

Al Shabaab execute a young boy in central Somalia

Al Shabaab on Thursday executed a young Somali boy in coastal district of Harardhere in Mudug region of central Somalia. Many of the local residents were invited at a main square in the district to watch the execution of the boy. The al Shabaab group had accused Garad Ahmed Ashkir, 22, of murdering a woman after raping her, according to a resident in Haradere’s coastal area.

IDPs in Baidoa receive aid from local aid agency

At least 682 drought and famine displaced families camping in a refugee camp in Baidoa town of Bay region have received financial aid from a local aid agency. Review and Migler Development handed over $ 6,000 to area drought response committee for distributions to the needy people. Mahad Abdikarin Ismail, one of the local beneficiaries thanked the donor agency and the local committee who fairly distributed the aid.
Three bodies found dumped in Galkacyo town

The security forces in that region say that investigations is underway and that they will soon bring to book the perpetrators as well as reduce the crime level in that regions.

At least 10 people were killed and 20 others wounded after armed militias and Puntland security forces clashed in the north village of Galka’yo city of Mudug region today on Thursday, reports said. The battle occurred between unknown armed militias and Puntland security forces, killing 10 and injuring 20 others including civilians and officials, reports said.

AMISOM asks for 10,000 additional troops for Somalia

Islamic insurgents, the al Shabaab, have withdrawn from Mogadishu but the war is not over as peacekeepers brace for the second phase of spreading out of the Somali capital. However, the AU and the TFG cannot accomplish this without 10,000 more troops, military officials said. Deployments beyond Mogadishu will stretch their presence and the insurgents can easily reorganize and overrun them.

TFG forces uncovered arms kept ‘illegally’ in Mogadishu

UNHCR chief visits Mogadishu, urges massive humanitarian assistance

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Ant�³nio Guterres urged the international community to rapidly increase aid to displaced Somalis during a landmark visit to Mogadishu. “We are seeing here a deadly combination of conflict and drought and the misery is out of proportion to what is being done,” the High Commissioner said on Wednesday during a visit to a settlement for IDPs located on the grounds of the city’s crumbling cathedral.

Somalia famine yet to reach its peak: UN

Food will be increasingly scarce in famine-struck southern Somalia until next year’s harvest, the head of the United Nations refugee agency said on Thursday. “We have not yet reached the peak of the crisis,” said UNHCR chief Antonio Guterres. Rains are not due in rebel-controlled southern Somalia, the worst affected area where close to three million people are at risk of starving, until October, meaning harvest will be in early 2012.

French ship to deliver food to Horn of Africa

A ship loaded with nearly 400 tons of food for drought and famine victims in the Horn of Africa was set to depart from France yesterday. The U.N. World Food Program says the French ship is carrying enough flour, sugar, rice and oil to feed more than 22,000 people for one month. The food was donated by a conglomeration of French businesses and organizations, and will be used for the WFP’s operations in Somalia. Officials say the supplies should arrive in around 12 days.

Starving Somalis make new life in war-torn Mogadishu
