Thousands protest in Beledweyne town over al Shabaab harsh rules

Thousands of protesters took to the streets on Sunday to complain of harsh rules and damage inflicted on them by al Shabaab in Somalia. They accused the militia of harassing innocent area residents. The protesters walked in large groups in streets of Baladweyn streets and threw stones on vehicles owned by al Shabaab. Some of the protesters were also heard insulting the Somali rebels.

Puntland leader blames terrorist for scholar’s assassination

The Puntland President Abdirahman Mohamed Mohamud Farole has sent his condolences to the family of the deceased Dr. Ahmed Haji Abdirahman. Dr. Ahmed Haji Abdirahman was killed yesterday morning as he left a local mosque. The President also sent his condolences to the people of Bossaso, Puntland and Somalia.

Al Shabaab set fire on relief food in Barewe, Lower Shabelle

Al Shabaab in Barawe town of Lower Shabelle on Sunday reportedly destroyed ICRC relief food meant for the needy families in the area. Reports say rebel leaders set fire to over 1800 sacks of beans at an open field on Sunday afternoon. The destroyed beans are said to be part of ICRC relief aid that was earlier delivered in the region. Rebel leaders claimed that the beans were poisoned.

1 killed as clan fighting flares up in central Somalia

One person was confirmed dead and two others wounded after a fierce clan fighting flared up in central war-torn Somalia, reports said yesterday. Witnesses said, the fighting erupted in the early hours of Monday in Las-igal, a village some 105-km, north of Galka’yo in Mudug region, after two armed tribal militia loyal to Puntland and Galmudug state got into a dispute over an unknown issue.

Today, the European Commission decided to provide a further €50 million to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) which brings the EU contribution to a total of € 258 million since 2007. Catherine Ashton, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and European Commission Vice-President, underlined that: “The EU is working with the African Union to bring to an end to the crisis in Somalia”.

Kenya’s incursion in Somalia

Kenyan troops invaded Somalia on Oct. 16. The official version given by Nairobi was that it began chasing al Shabaab, the powerful Somali Muslim organization that controls large parts of southern Somalia and is allegedly linked to al Qaeda. UN council expands Eritrea sanctions over Somalia

Security Council on Monday expanded sanctions against Eritrea for continuing to provide support to Islamist militants in the virtually lawless Horn of Africa nation of Somalia, including al Shabaab. The council resolution, which received 13 votes in favor, none against and two abstentions, was diluted from earlier drafts that sought to ban investment in Eritrea’s mining industry and outlaw imports of its minerals. Asmara denies aiding al Shabaab or any other militant groups in Somalia.

UN envoy strongly warns against undermining peace process

The United Nations envoy for Somalia today strongly warned anyone trying to undermine an agreed framework outlining political actions required to restore peace and stability in the country that their actions will not be tolerated by the international community. “The message is clear: the roadmap is the way forward and spoilers seeking to derail the process will not be tolerated,” said Augustine P. Mahiga, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia, in an letter addressed to all the people of Somalia.

Somali pirate attacks sharply down in November

The number of hijackings by Somali pirates was sharply down last month compared to the same period last year. The latest figures provided by the European Naval Force show just 12 attempted pirate attacks in November 2011, compared to 35 last year. BBC Security Correspondent Frank Gardner says this is partly the result of the growing number of armed guards on board ships.
