Somali police officers commence refresher training in Mogadishu

Mid-Level Management Officers of the Somali Police Force have begun a four -week refresher training course inMogadishu as the capital continues to rise from the ashes of the past twenty years.

The training was launched in a colourful ceremony on Tuesday at thePoliceAcademyand attended by Interior Minister, Abdisamad Moalin Mohamad. It will be conducted by Somali police trainers with the help of AMISOM police mentors at facilities in Hamar Jajab district. Courses covered will include: Human Rights, Community Based Policing, Gender Based Violence and Public Order Management.

Uganda delegation arrives in Mogadishu

A Ugandan delegation led by Deputy Defense Minister of Uganda arrived in Mogadishu on Thursday for meetings with Somali government officials. According to reports, they held talks with president Sheik Sharif on recent advances made against al Shabaab.

Nine al Shabaab fighters perish in explosion

At least nine al Shabaab fighters travelling in two separate vehicles passed away after unknown people attacked them with a hand grenade in “wabxo” region of Galgaduud province.

Two markets re-open in Daynile district

Two main markets were re-opened in Daynile district by the government in areas previously controlled by al Shabaab. The TFG backed by AMISOM over the past two months have pushed al Shabaab out of Daynile district.

Three killed, others taken hostage as rebel fighters ambush vehicle in Lower Juba

Three people were killed on Thursday and others wounded when al Shabaab rebel fighters opened fire on vehicle transporting consignments of Khat (a mild stimulant) from Dobley to Qoqani at an area between Qoqani and Tabta, Lower Juba.

Poland backs Kenya’s war on al Shabaab

Poland has backed Kenya’s military operation in somalia to push out al Shabaab militants. Polish ambassador to Kenya Ms Anna Grupinska said her country supported the decision by Kenya to tackle the Al Shabaab menace. As Minhaj Gedi Farah lay silently on a hospital bed three months ago, even his mother had given up hope that the skeletal Somali baby would live. Weeks of intensive feeding, though, have transformed him into a chubby-cheeked boy who crawls. The is one of several stories highlighted Wednesday in an annual New York fundraising event held by the aid group International Rescue Committee, which helped nurse Minhaj back to health.

After famine, drought Somali refugees face floods

Somalis who fled famine, drought and conflict now face the misery of heavy rains and flooding in the region, the UN refugee agency said. “Thousands of displaced Somalis have been affected by heavy rains and flooding in parts of Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia,” High Commissioner for Refugees spokesman Andrej Mahecic said.

Migrants targeted in Somaliland

Kenya activist warns against creeping xenophobia
