Galmudug condemns the recent attack on a female journalist in Galkayo, Mudug region

Galmudug administration has strongly condemned the recent shooting of a female journalist, Horiyo Abdulkadir, who was shot and wounded in Galkayo a week ago. Horiyo who is in a stable condition and still nursing the gun wound she sustained was on September 14, 2011 shot by unknown gangs while in Galkayo.
Uganda Defense minister visits Somalia

The Somali Deputy Prime Minister who is also the country’s Defense Minister Hussein Arab Isse yesterday welcomed his Ugandan counterpart Crispus Kiyonga who alongside a high level Ugandan delegation came to Mogadishu in a bid to meet the security heads of Somalia. The Somali Defense Minister said that within five months all military barracks and installations will be revived and the Somali National Army boosted.
Somali gov’t vows to flush out al Shabaab from the country

The TFG on Monday vowed to purge al Shabaab from the regions and areas it controls. Abdisamad Moallim Mohamoud, the interior and home security minister says there are planes currently conducting such efforts and that the TFG is committed to bringing very highly skilled and trained soldiers in their battles against the insurgent group.
Over 30 people die of starvation in central Somalia

More 30 people have died of starvation in the district of Eldher of Galgudud region in central Somalia, local residents reported yesterday. Abdullahi Ahmed Samatar, a resident in Eldher district, confirmed the death of those people because of hunger as drought ravages many parts of Somalia.

Tebbutt attack: Kenyan man charged with kidnap

A Kenyan man, Mr Ali Babitu Kololo, 25, was yesterday charged with the the kidnapping of Judith Tebbutt from Kiwayu Safari Village near Lamu two weeks ago. The suspect worked at the exclusive resort which is located on an island several kilometres from the port town of Kismayu in Somalia. Mr Kololo however denied the accusations.
World Bank grants 30 million USD to help Somali refugees in Ethiopia

The World Bank announced in Washington, DC, on Thursday that it was donating 30 million US dollars to UNHCR to help the more than half-a-million refugees in targeted camps in Ethiopia and Kenya. The grant will be used for over an 18-month period to combat malnutrition, provide basic health services (including pediatric and maternal care) and for an immunization program.

Famine-hit Somalia needs long-term, joint effort, says MSF Italy

The head of MSF Italy called on Sunday on all parties involved in relief operations in Somalia to work together to ensure that aid supplies arriving in Mogadishu are safely delivered to the tens of thousands in need. The Italian daily Corriere della Sera quoted Kostas Moschochoritis, head of MSF Italy, as saying. “Only a long-term, joint international effort will allow food supplies to reach those in need and spare thousands of lives.”
Group walks in Canada for Somalia famine

Somali kids win weapons in Quran contest

An Islamist insurgent-run radio station in Somalia says it is awarding guns, bombs and books to three children in a Quran recital contest. The station announced Monday that the first prize winner in the contest received a rifle and $700, the second prize winner got a rifle and $500, and the third prize winner received two bombs.
