MSF Belgium staff killed, injured in Mogadishu

One of the MSF Belgium staff operating in Mogadishu has been shot and killed and two others wounded by a gunman, witnesses said on Thursday afternoon. Reports say the accident took place around Shamo hotel in the capital after an armed gunman who was reportedly member of the staff of the agency attacked the foreigners in a building belonging to MSF Belgium near the hotel.
TFG to support Bosaso market fire victims

The Somali government is working on plans to help the victims of the recent fire that gutted down Bosaso market early this month, officials say. The Trade and Industry Minister who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, Abdiwahab Ugas Hussein said his government in conjunction with friendly countries and aid agencies will work on ways in which the victims can get financial support since they lost their property during the inferno.

Somalia’s Transitional Federal Parliament session has on Thursday adjourned, weeks after clashes between the MPs supporting the Speaker of the House, Mr Sharif Hassan Sheikh Aden, and those against him. Omar Islow, one of the Somali MPs said that the session, which was expected to open in the hall of the parliament in Mogadishu Somalia, has been adjourned for next Saturday.
Egyptian Foreign ministry holds talks with Somaliland minister Of Foreign Affairs

The government of Egypt on Wednesday held talks with Somaliland’s minister of Foreign Affairs in the Egyptian capital Cairo. The minister Hirsi Ali Hajji Hassan and other key officials were among the Somaliland delegation who paid visit to Egypt. The talks between Somaliland officials and Egyptian leaders took place at the house of the newly nominated Egyptian prime minister.
Puntland forces conduct massive operations in Bosaso town

Puntland forces conducted major operations on Thursday in the port and business town of Bosaso in northern Somalia, arresting people suspected of being involved in blasts and killings which took place in the town, according to eyewitnesses. Reports from Bosaso say that the security forces of Puntland administration began a series of crackdowns to assure the overall stability of the town, following the latest acts against the security by armed men.

Al Shabaab flee Kenyan forces in Gedo

Kenya Defence Forces now control most of the strategic Gedo region in Somalia after al Shabaab militia fled, according to Kenyan and Transitional Federal Government officials in the northern sector. “All Shabaab is now on the run,” TFG’s military commander in Gedo, Abbas Ibrahim Gure told The Standard. This follows the ouster of the militia group from Burhache town.

Mombasa receives rare visit from world cruise liner

Kenya had signed a deal with the European Union to provide security escorts to cruise ships visiting the East African coast, Tourism Minister Najib Balala said Tuesday. “The EU will be working with our navy to beef up security so as to attract more tourists,” Balala said after receiving Silver Winds, a cruise ship that left Miami, the United States, with 500 tourists on a worldwide tour.

AU claims success against al Shabaab

African Union forces in Somalia have successfully pushed the Islamic militant group al Shabaab out of the capital Mogadishu, a commander told CNN Thursday. The African Union Mission in Somalia, known as AMISOM, is trying to consolidate power for Somalia’s weak Transitional Federal Government in Mogadishu, where al Shabaab had been especially active in its battle against that government. “We have managed to beat them off,” said Maj. Gen. Fred Mugisha, force commander for AMISOM.

2 Doctors Without Borders workers shot in Somalia

A disgruntled former employee shot at least two international workers from the aid group Doctors Without Borders at the group’s office in the Somali capital, a security guard said Thursday. At least one person was killed. Ahmed Ali, a security guard for the aid group which is known as MSF — its initials in French — said a Somali employee who ran its logistics was dismissed from his job on Wednesday.
Somali minister says Turkey’s educational system model for us

Op Ed: It was a year of triumph, struggle and inspiration

Late this summer, we spent six weeks in East Africa, reporting and working in Kenya’s Dadaab refugee camp as thousands staggered in daily from drought-and famine-stricken Somalia. We’ll never forget Ibrahim Ali, who arrived clutching his six-year-old son, now an only child. Ali buried his wife and three of his four children in makeshift graves by the roadside during his 21-day journey from southern Somalia to Kenya.
