The public viewing function at the regional headquarters in Jowhar town attracted a cross section of local villagers as top officials of the insurgency group graced the occasion.

An international aid group says over 800 Somali children arrive at Kenyan refugee camps each day to escape their country’s devastating drought. Save the Children says that the children are part of the nearly 1,300 people who come each day to the overcrowded Dadaab refugee camps in northeastern Kenya.

Nearly one in three Somali children malnourished: UN

A drought and high food prices have brought increased malnutrition to Somalia, where the situation is “rapidly deteriorating,” a high-ranking United Nations official said Wednesday. “We have currently the highest rate of malnutrition in the whole of Africa, more than 30 percent of the children are suffering from global acute malnutrition,” said Mark Bowden, the UN humanitarian coordinator for Somalia.
