The African Union reiterates appeal for greater mobilization to defeat al Shabaab
11 Feb – Source: AU – 571 words
The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Jean Ping, has learnt of the announcement, on 9 February 2012, in a video statement, by the head of al Qaeda, Ayman Al Zawahiri, that Somalia’s al Shabaab had officially affiliated itself with the international terrorist organization. This followed an earlier audio message in which the Somali group’s leader, Ahmed Abdi Godane aka Mukhtar Abu al†Zubeyr, pledged allegiance to the al Qaeda leader, vowing that his followers “will march with him as loyal soldiers.”
The decision by al Shabaab to formally join al Qaeda is a desperate move by a group riddled with internal disputes and weakened following the recent gains made in Mogadishu by the forces of the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and those of AMISOM, as well as the operations being conducted in other parts of the country by the TFG forces with the support of Ethiopia and the new AMISOM contingent from Kenya.
The Chairperson of the Commission notes that the evidence is now clear that al Shabaab is an outfit of al Qaeda, driven by a global terrorist agenda, far removed from the preoccupations and interests of the people of Somalia, and bent on destabilizing the Horn of Africa and beyond. Over the years, al Shabaab has caused mayhem in Somalia and inflicted untold suffering to the Somali people, as demonstrated by its repeated and indiscriminate attacks against civilians and its refusal to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance to the needy populations, especially during the severe drought that affected Somalia last year.
Against this background, the Chairperson of the Commission reiterates AU’s appeal to the Somalis who have not yet joined the Djibouti peace process, including the June 2011 Kampala Accord and the September 2011 Mogadishu Political Roadmap, to do so in earnest.
He urges them to pursue their political objectives through peaceful means, with due respect to the legitimate aspirations of the Somali people and their desire to open a new chapter in the troubled history of their nation.
The Chairperson of the Commission calls on the international community to extend the required support to the Somali people in their quest for peace, stability and reconciliation. Today more than ever before, there is an opportunity to turn around the situation in Somalia for the greater good of its long†suffering people and in support of regional stability and international security, including the overall efforts to fight terrorism and piracy.
In this respect, the Chairperson of the Commission emphasizes once again that support by the UN Security Council to the strengthening of AMISOM, on the basis of its new strategic concept, as adopted by the AU Peace and Security Council on 5 January 2012, is paramount.
Accordingly, he urges the Security Council to speedily take the action expected of it, in line with its primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security. Such a step will go a long way in strengthening the momentum towards a successful Conference in London on 23 February 2012 and will pave the way for a greater mobilization of the international community in support of peace, security and reconciliation in Somalia.
The Chairperson of the Commission also calls on all AU partners to provide adequate support for the Somali national security forces, which, ultimately, are expected to ensure the long term security of Somalia and contribute towards the implementation of the AU peace and security agenda.

Somalia President: Al Qaeda now ‘a colonial power’
13 Feb – Source: Africa Review – 277 words
Somalia’s President wants al Qaeda listed as a colonial power in the Horn of Africa country following its announcement of a merger with al Shabaab, the radical Islamist group, in Somalia last week.
“We must identify al Qaeda as the last colonial power that invaded our country,” said President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed while speaking Sunday at a function in southern Mogadishu to enhance social integration in the war torn city on Sunday.
Britain and Italy were the country’s colonial rulers before Somalia got its independence in 1960. Now President Ahmed wants al Qaeda added to that list in what may be an attempt to rally sentiment against the extremist group that controls significant pockets of the country.
President Ahmed has expressed his doubts over peace talks with the group.
“Al Shabaab’s move to join al Qaeda erodes all hopes for peace talks,” said the President, who was clad in military combat attire and wielded a black stick.
Mogadishu mayor Mohamoud Ahmed Nur alias Tarzan said that al Shabaab’s union with al Qaeda was an indication that the Islamist movement was split. “I believe that Godane (popular name of the leader of al Shabaab, Sheikh Mukhtar Abdurahman Abu Zubayr) led a minority of the fanatical movement to join al Qaeda,” said Mayor Nur. “I urge the majority of al Shabaab loyalists to come forward and unite with the TFG.”
UAE aid ‘urgently needed’ in Somalia
13 Feb – Source: National – 388 words
The former president of Ghana, Jerry Rawlings, has stressed the urgent need for UAE financial aid to help with the crisis in Somalia. Speaking on the sidelines of the Centre for Technology and Economic Development conference in the capital yesterday, Mr Rawlings said: “Africa is Africa and you don’t turn down any opportunity to assist your brothers and sisters.”
The two-day annual event, organised by New York University in Abu Dhabi, focused on how to enhance economic development in African countries through technology and innovation. Food security, energy, education and health care were at the top of the agenda.
Mr Rawlings, the African Union envoy to Somalia, said he was thankful for the “occasional assistance” towards the famine but stressed the need to go beyond that. In the past year Somalia has been plagued by famine, drought and violence from the conflict between the armed forces and the Islamist insurgent group al Shabab, which last week announced its official allegiance to al Qaeda.
Rawlings said making a change would not be easy, but would be possible with aid from the UAE Government and the international community.
Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi, the Minister of Foreign Trade, who inaugurated the conference, said the Government was making big investments in the field of technology and was excited about the considerable trade opportunities Africa represents.
Non-oil trade between the Emirates and African countries more than octupled between 2001 and 2010, to US$14.5 billion (Dh53.2bn) from $1.7bn, Sheikha Lubna said.

U.S. escalates drone use against Somalia
12 Feb – Source: Workers World – 824 words
The Pentagon and the White House continue to deny that United States military forces are directly involved in the current war over control of the Horn of Africa state of Somalia. Nevertheless, a Washington-directed drone struck an internationally supervised displaced persons camp just outside Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu.
Washington’s escalation of military involvement in the Horn of Africa is designed to control the geopolitical situation and to dominate the exploration and exploitation of oil that has recently been discovered in Somalia.
Over the last several months, U.S. drones have killed and injured hundreds of Somalis. The escalation of military actions aims to liquidate the al Shabaab Islamic resistance movement inside the country. The most recent attack on Feb. 3 drew international attention to the Obama administration’s role in East Africa.
Raxanreeb Broadcasting Corporation Radio reported, “The unmanned drone went down at Badbado [displaced person] camp which is in the Dharkenley district, south of Mogadishu. According to Badbado resident Ahmed Abdi, ‘It was around noon that we saw a white small aircraft flying over our camp and in minutes we saw it fall down here.’” (Feb. 3)
Reports indicated that soldiers from the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) and Somali officials entered the camp, removed the crashed drone and turned it over to the government.
Turkey denies links to forced evacuations in Somalia
12 Feb – Source: World Bulletin -135 words
The senior Turkish envoy in Somalia denied on Sunday allegations that Turks were forcing Somali people to leave public buildings. Turkey’s Ambassador in Mogadishu Cemalettin Kani Torun said Turkey had nothing to do with evacuation of state buildings.
Somali authorities have started to restore some public buildings in the capital, Mogadishu, most of which were schools. Somali citizens, who were living in the buildings for years due to civil war, famine and drought, were forced to leave buildings and they were replaced in other places.
“People who were forced to evacuate public buildings accuse Turkey, but Turkey has nothing to do with this evacuation, which is totally a move of the Somali government,” Ambassador Torun said. Torun said this move was exploitation of Turkey’s good will, and Turkey was in Somalia for just humanitarian purposes.

High-ranking officials celebrate the US Navy Seal operation which freed prisoners in Galcayo, north-east Somalia, but not without killing nine kidnappers first. The freeing of American Jessica Buchanan and Danish Poul Thisted at the end of last January by a successful air supported commando rescue operation, with no US casualties, was celebrated as a great military victory.
Once again the soldiers who brought Bin Laden to an end in April 2011 and freed Buchanan and Thisted, were seen as heroes. They both work for the Danish Demining Group.
“While the conference purports to address security concerns, particularly piracy and terrorism, the ultimate intention of the conference, according to many Somali analysts, could be to undermine Somalia’s sovereignty and subject the Somali people to a new form of colonialism — including by “proxy states” such as Kenya and Ethiopia, which are sending high-level delegations to the conference.”
“The sense of humiliation that many Somalis feel about the conference is best described by Arman, who in an op-ed article in Eurasia Review writes: “At this dreadful moment in its history — when the obituary of a nation on life-support is being written — political correctness is a luxury that Somalis cannot afford.”
Why latest foreign‘re-colonisation’ project of Somalia is doomed to fail

In the first two decades of the 20th century, Somali warrior-poet Seyyid Mohammed Abdulle Hassan (nicknamed the “Mad Mullah” by the British) fought against European forces trying to assert their influence in Somalia. His attempts were ultimately unsuccessful, but Hassan remains a source of inspiration among Somalis.
Foreign intervention and occupation have always been violently resisted in Somalia, as demonstrated right from the “Black Hawk Down” incident that led to the evacuation of US forces from Somalia in the early 1990s to the recent retreat of Ethiopian forces when they tried to assert their authority in Mogadishu after the fall of the Islamic Courts Union.
“I cannot see forward to some miracle in Somalia. Dark clouds pile up on the political sky and the need for employment is enormous, but how many investors is it possible to attract to a country which is on the last place in Transparency International’s Corruptions list? It is difficult to be optimistic about the future in Somalia. I was struck by the highest leaders in the transitional Federal Government in Somalia their resistance and their desire to go further and live together in peace and some semblance of normality.”

Reconstruction of Somalia after the devastating civil war in 1991 is not moving forward, even if that let be slowly. Need for employment is enormous, but the payment of aid funds promised is slow.
Today is exactly 20 years since the civil war took place that devastated the capital city and surrounding areas and the most regional in Somalia. Somalia was thrown into our living room via television, radio and headlines in war style. After 20 years, the country has disappeared from the newspaper pages. What has been done in Somalia? Is there any hope today?
Large parts of the country are governed by extremists and militants. The majority of people live without access to justice, equal opportunities and human rights. Last 20 years Somalis has never known anything other than violence and war. Most people in Somalia are dependent on food aid literally held by starvation.
