Heavily armed fighters belonging to al Shabaab yesterday launched an ambush attack on military convoy vehicles carrying Somali government soldiers near the southern town of Afmadow, reports said. According to the residents in Afmadow, the attack took place at Ago-Libah vicinity located on the outskirts of the town, killing at least four combatants.

Somalia’s new Federal Parliament has elected Prof Mohamed Sheikh Osman Jawari, a professional lawyer and MP, as its first speaker in a landmark ballot.
Prof Jawari won the most number of votes Tuesday at an election held at the Scuola Polizia (Police Academy) in Mogadishu, garnering 119 votes from the 236 MPs present in the hall.
Four other candidates were in the race, with his nearest rival, Dr Ali Khalif Gallayr, a former prime minister of Somalia, picking up 77 votes.

Kenya’s prime minister said on Wednesday the country’s enemies were behind the killing of a Muslim cleric that triggered riots he described as being conducted by an “underground organisation” to create divisions between Christians and Muslims. Aboud Rogo, accused by the United States of helping al Qaeda-linked Islamist militants in Somalia, was facing charges in a Kenyan court of possessing weapons when he was shot in his car by unknown attackers in Mombasa on Monday.
