UN, Kenya negotiating costs for Somalia war, says Kenyan PM

Kenya is yet to agree with the United Nations on how to fund its troops’ operations in Somalia. Prime Minister Raila Odinga said the Government and the UN are rooting for different time frames on funding. “We have been saying that UN takes charge of the cost as from January, but they (UN) are talking of August. So this is a matter we are still debating,” Raila told Parliament, adding that the operation has claimed 17 soldiers while five are missing.

Speaking to the press in the presidential house, president Hassan said the ministers and him discussed a number of issues, including the relations of the two governments and the development sectors.


President Mohamud to attend Uganda’s golden jubilee in Kampala

Official: The allied forces arrested 100 al Shabaab suspects in Kismayo

The Somali government on Wednesday said its security forces arrested 100 people suspected of having links with al Shabaab in operations in the port city of Kismayo. General Sahardid, the army commander of Lower Jubba region said the raids are part of moves to strengthen the security of the city following five explosions that killed two people on Tuesday.

Reports from Kismayo city say that the security situation is quiet and that national forces and AU peacekeeping forces, in particular the Kenyan contingent, are tactically keeping the security on eye. Ali Houmed, an AU force spokesman, confirmed a blast had taken place at the offices, in a part of town known as K2, and said AU troops had arrested a man suspected of planting and detonating the device.

Somali business community to help police fight al Shabaab

The Somali Business Community in Nairobi has asked security agents to use all means at their disposal to flush out Al-Shabaab militants hiding in Kenya. The amount of foreign money circulating in Kenya from unexplained sources fell drastically in the three months to June, reflecting the extent to which the military operation in Somalia has disrupted the networks that were suspected to be responsible for the flow. Unexplained foreign money in Kenya’s banking system fell to Sh6.5 billion ($76.5 million) in June from a high of Sh170 billion ($2 billion) at the beginning of last year, the lowest in five years.

African troops comb Kismayu for bombs after Somali rebel retreat

African Union and Somali troops combed the Somali port of Kismayu on Wednesday for bombs hidden by al Qaeda-linked militants who fled their last urban bastion but warned of retaliatory strikes, the two militarise said. The retreat signalled the demise of al Shabaab as a quasi-conventional military force, say analysts who expect the militants to resort increasingly to suicide bombings and hit-and-run attacks similar to those that rocked the capital Mogadishu over the last year.
