At least two people were killed and five others injured in a huge roadside bomb explosion inn Somalia’s southern port city of Kismayo, the latest in series of attacks against Somali and Kenyan forces, reports said. Tuesday’s attack took place at Alanley village, targeting Somali government forces as they were carrying out massive operations aimed to secure the city, after al Shabaab insurgents vacated.

During their meeting in Kampala, the two leaders discussed a range of issues including Kenyan military presence in Somalia and the need for Kenyan troops to secure Kismayo.

A blind Somali man, Mohamed Ahmed Mohamud, completed his Masters degree in African Studies from the International University of Africa in Khartoum the capital of Sudan. Mr. Mohamud, who was born blind in southern Somalia, came from a humble family. He was lucky enough to have received an education despite conflict in Somalia.

Kibaki seeks disarming, integration of surrendering al Shabaab

President Mwai Kibaki has called for the Demobilisation, Disarmament and Reintegration of the al Shabaab insurgents surrendering to the AMISOM forces. Speaking on Tuesday in Kampala, Uganda, when he held bilateral talks with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia, the Head of State noted that as part of the reconstruction of Somalia, there is need to take urgent measures to disarm those surrendering to avoid any regrouping.

The former Garissa police chief Felix Jay Munyambu, who Internal Security minister Katoo ole Metito said had been sacked for allowing a terror suspect to enter Kenya from Somalia, has resumed work after close to two years. Munyambu was interdicted on July 2009 to pave way for investigations into claims of embezzlement of funds when he served as the Kiambu police commander. He was reinstated in 2011 and posted to Police Headquarters but was not assigned to any section.
