Somali Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon on Monday held talks with Women representatives in Mogadishu, where they discussed the role of Somali women in rebuilding the country. Al Shabaab suspects arrested in major crackdown in Marka, Somalia

Somali Security Forces alongside AU peacekeepers carried out a major security operation in Marka, Lower Shabelle. As confirmed by the mayor of the town, Ahmed Maalin Ukaashe, the purpose of the operation was to curb insecurity and to flash out al Shabaab remnants from the region. At least 3 people suspected of having links with the extremists have being apprehended in this latest crackdown on the group.


Somali MP condemns attack on Shabelle Media journalist

After unknown gunmen tried on Sunday evening to murder Mohamed Mohamud Turyare, a journalist working for the independent Shabelle Media Network based in Mogadishu, condemnations have been on the rise. Mr. Mohamud’s assassinations bid drew local and international condemnations, Omar Mohamud, a lawmaker in the federal parliament has criticized in the strongest terms possible the attack on the journalist. The MP called to bring those responsible for the shooting to justice as soon as possible.


Puntland to vaccinate 1 million livestock

Puntland has embarked on an ambitious plan to vaccinate all animals in the region from respiratory infections leading to killer respiratory diseases. The campaign funded by United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) aims to vaccinate one million animals, mainly goats, in the region.


Al Shabaab fighters attack the home of Baidoa’s district commissioner

At least three people were killed in a nighttime hit-and-run attack on the home of Baidoa district commissioner Adam Bid on Sunday night. Al Shabaab fighters have claimed responsibility for the attack, saying that senior government military official was killed during a fierce gun battle between the assailants and the security guards.

Senior al-Qaeda commander operating in Somalia was arrested in Yemen’s Hadramout province shortly after he returned from Somalia, Yemeni security officials said on Monday. The daily Arabic newspaper of Al Yowm has quoted from security officials in Yemen that unnamed foreign al-Qaeda commander was captured near the fishing harbour of Dhaba at Hadramout on Sunday.

Somalia piracy falls to six-year low as guards defend ships

Somalia piracy attacks against merchant shipping fell to the lowest in six years in the third quarter as armed guards on vessels and naval patrols cut attempted hijacks on the trade route linking Asia and Europe. One ship was attacked compared with 36 in the same quarter a year ago, the London-based International Maritime Bureau, which has been tracking incidents since 1991, said in an e- mailed report today.


Somali League reacts to HS article, denounces families for forcibly taking children out of Finland

The Finnish Somali League has condemned the practice of taking children away from Finland against their will. On Sunday Helsingin Sanomat reported that each year a few young people who had lived in Finland and who had been sent back to Somalia by their parents, appear at the Finnish Embassy in neighbouring Ethiopia saying that they want to go back to Finland. Reasons for sending the children back to Somalia have included behavioural problems, or marriage.

The election of Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as president of the first post-transitional government in Somalia has raised the hopes of the Somali people, who have lived without a functioning central government for more than 20 years. President Mohamud has inherited 20 years of dysfunctional institutions. In the past 12 years, both the Transitional National Government (TNG) and the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) had many opportunities to fix the country’s institutions, but failed to do so, largely because they did not have the political will.
