Somali youth parliamentary committee formed in Mogadishu

A group of young parliamentarians held a conference in Mogadishu to create an official Somali youth parliamentarians committee. After the conference, parliamentarian Bishaar Ugaas Ibrahim gave the media details of the committee and discussed the meeting. He said after an intense discussion and consultation, the members came to the conclusion that it was very necessary for a committee to be created and to represent the Somali youth in the parliament.
2 piracy suspects arrested in Eyl coastal town

Puntland security forces in northern Somalia have arrested two men suspecte d of being pirates. Mr. Faisal Khalif Wa ‘ays, the deputy mayor of Eyl coastal town in Puntland, told Radio Garowe that the two suspects were arrested at Gaba’ town 50km north of Eyl. “When arrested, the two suspects were on a speedboat and had weapons, ladders and other piracy equipment in their possession,” Mr. Wa’ays said. The deputy mayor of Eyl stated that the two suspects have “admitted” to being involved in piracy crimes and indicated that they were traveling by sea from Beyla to Gara’ad, south of Eyl.
Somalia gives embassy land to UK

The Somali government has officially handed over a piece of land earmarked for the construction of a UK embassy in Mogadishu. President Mohamud handed over the land to a UK delegation led by British ambassador to Somalia Matt Baugh who visited Mogadishu on Wednesday.The president on Tuesday received a letter of credence from the new Australian ambassador to Somalia and urged other countries to open their diplomatic mission in Somalia.

Kenyan Parliament against KDF operations in Garissa

Parliament has condemned the operations of the Kenya Defence Forces in Garissa where the army is alleged to have shot area residents leaving six of them nursing bullet wounds. Terming it as unjust, Deputy house speaker Farah Maalim has directed a joint parliamentary committee to investigate the operations of KDF in Garissa, Baragoi and Eastleigh. MPs are especially irked by the deployment of KDF without their approval.

Africa Oil’s third-quarter results demonstrated there is proof of life in Puntland, Somalia – a positive for Range Resources (RRL) and Red Emperor Resources (RMP) – according to analysts at FoxDavies. In a statement issued on Tuesday, Africa Oil confirmed that it, through its 44.6% ownership interest in Horn Petroleum, completed Shabeel North-1 in Puntland, the second well of a two-well exploration programme. While the first two exploration wells in Puntland did not flow oil, Africa Oil remained “highly encouraged that all of the critical elements exist for oil accumulations”.

Kenyan army and security forces clashed with locals in the predominantly ethnic-Somali town of Garissa on Tuesday, leaving scores wounded and many residents fuming with accusations of arson and physical abuse. At least seven people are nursing bullet wounds from violence that broke out a day after unknown gunmen killed three soldiers who had stopped to change a tire on their truck in the northeastern region that borders war-torn southern Somalia.

The Somali militant group al Shabaab is currently losing ferocious battles against Kenyan troops in Southern Somalia – part of an African Union peacekeeping mission. However, they are winning a strategic war back in Kenya; this is the battle for hearts and minds. On Sunday, a blast likely carried out by al-Shabaab sleeper cells in Nairobi killed seven Kenyans on a minibus. Soon after, a machete-wielding mob of angry Kenyans descended on the capital’s Eastleigh or “Little Mogadishu” neighborhood. They pillaged shops, burned cars and left dozens of people injured.
