Mogadishu transport operators welcome the removal of road blocks

Some of the transport operators in Mogadishu have welcomed the removal of illegal road blocks in some of the districts in the Benadir region.
Talking to Mustaqbal radio, Daahir Adow who is one of the drivers of the Mogadishu public transport said that they are now operating very smoothly in Banadir areas.

Somali cabinet meet to discuss the illegal road blocks

Somali cabinet met in the presidential palace and discussed several issues including the illegal road blocks in the capital city and its surroundings. Today’s meeting which was chaired by the Somali prime minister Abdi farah Shirdon was attended by most the cabinet ministers who all emphasized the importance of cleaning these road blocks. After the meeting came into an end the minister of information briefed the press and said that the cabinet ministers fully welcomed the new actions taken against illegal road blocks in the capital city.
Government to liberate areas still under al Shabaab

Somalia’s Interior and National Security minister Abdikarin Hussein Gulled has said his ministry is working on plans to liberate areas in Hiiraan region still controlled by al Shabaab group. The minister also said the Somali forces in Hiiraan region are now being reconstituted.

The people of Somaliland voted peacefully as more than 50 international observers monitored municipal elections on Wednesday. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the newly-appointed president of Somalia offered his congratulations to Somaliland and signalled his hope that the two will continue their dialogue.

‘We start killing hostages tomorrow’ pirates tell family of Dubai crew

Somali pirates have threatened to kill hostages on the Dubai-based MT Royal Grace ship, prompting relatives to appeal to governments for help before tomorrow’s deadline. The empty chemical tanker with a crew comprising 17 Indians, three Nigerians, a Pakistani and a Bangladeshi was hijacked in March when sailing from Sharjah to Nigeria. “We got a call and we were clearly told that they were giving us until November 30 or that was the end,” said Sharmishta, a relative of a family member on board.
Somali border police get Land Cruisers

The Kenyan police yesterday received 17 vehicles to boost security in refugee camps and along the border the Kenya-Somalia border.
The United Nations High Commission for Refugees country representative Elike Seghor handed over the vehicles to Internal Security minister Katoo Ole Metito.
Seghor said the donation is part of a security partnership project signed between UNHCR and the government in April 20. Ten of the vehicles were donated for police operations in the Dadaab Refugee Camp and the rest to the Kakuma Refugee Camp.

Election observers readying report on Somaliland

Election observers are gathering data following Wednesday’s municipal elections in Somaliland. They hope to present their preliminary findings to the National Electoral Commission (NEC) on Monday. The observers were stationed at about 20 percent of the polling stations.
Dr. Steve Kibble, head of the London-based NGO Progressio, also led the International Election Observers mission in Somaliland.
