The president of Somalia Hassan Shiekh Mohamud, told the BBC Somali service that his government will never negotiate with al Shabaab in any way whatsoever.

The president also mentioned that the ideological theory that says Somalia is owned by all Muslims regardless of their background is far fetched, adding that the horn of African nation belongs to its citizen.

For the last two years, the Somali government has taken in hundreds of al Shabaab fighters who have defected for various reasons.

The United Nations human rights chief today called on the Somali Government to re-open the case of a Somali journalist and the alleged rape victim he interviewed, after they were sentenced to one year in prison, stressing that the sentencing is a serious blow to the fight against sexual violence in the country.
“Sexual abuse in the camps for displaced people in Somalia is a real issue, and any effort to expose, denounce and deter these crimes should be supported,” said the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay. “It is deeply disturbing that a woman alleging rape can be penalized for reporting such a crime, and a journalist jailed for investigating it.”

Waayaha Cusub to Stage Peace Festival

Mogadishu, a city in which extremists banned music and threatened and attacked musicians for almost six years, is set to stage the Somali Reconciliation Festival in mid-March and play host to Somalia’s leading hip-hop acts.
The festival is the brainchild of the influential Somali hip-hop crew Waayaha Cusub, led by rapper Shiine Akhyaar Ali. It will be the first major concert in the city since civil war broke out two decades ago. The Somali government, backed by African Union forces, liberated Mogadishu from al Qaeda-backed al Shabaab rebels last year. Though the city remains on edge, the festival’s organizers – in collaboration with the government – want to act fast to build on the optimism that the war is coming to an end.
