A literacy teaching campaign for pastoralist communities began in Mudug, Galgadud and Hiran regions last week, led by a UK-based organization, Iftin. Around 2,300 people, mainly children, from more than 13 villages in the three regions are to benefit from the teaching campaign that will run for two months. Local teachers will be engaged during their weekend days off to carry out the classes. Abdullahi Sheikh Hassan Mohamed, the director of Iftin in central regions, said the campaign aimed at increasing the literacy rate among the rural nomadic community. These people have little or no chance to access an organized system of education. Abdi Isa Mohamed, a resident of Dagahder village in Galgadud, benefited from Iftin’s literacy teaching last year, which changed his life. “It is said that illiteracy is darkness. I was part of this campaign last year, for two months, and now I’m out of the darkness I was in, I can read and write Somali,” he said. Iftin has spread its work from Galgadud last year to three regions this year, and aims to expand to cover rural communities across the country. The classes focus on reading and writing Somali and basic arithmetic.
