Diarrhoea kills three children in Gedo

30 Sept- Source: Radio Ergo- 257 words

Three children have died from diarrhoeal diseases in Fafahdun, a remote village 84 km west of Bardhere in Gedo. The deaths of the children were reported by the area commissioner, Aden Shuqul Nunow. Several others are reported to have fallen victim to infection after drinking from a contaminated well that had dried up in the drought. Nunow told Radio Ergo the victims came from pastoralist families, who had fled from remote rural villages after they lost all their livestock to the ravaging drought in the region. He said all three children were under seven years old. He added that pastoralists in the area were forced to drink from abandoned water wells as they could not afford to buy clean water. “The impact of the drought and water shortage is very serious. It is causing people and livestock to die,” he warned. He urged both local and international aid agencies, the Somali people and the federal government to immediately respond to the looming crisis in the region by providing water, food and medicine. Siraji Ali Aden, a resident in the area, told Radio Ergo that the water shortage was their main concern. “Water scarcity is threatening the lives of people and livestock,” he stressed. He said water prices had skyrocketed to a level most of the local residents could not afford. “A barrel of water is now costing $17. Two months ago, it was selling at $2.” Water is brought to Fafahdun from areas as far as 55 km from the village.

U.K. government eases travel restriction on tourists visiting Kenya

30 Sept-Source: Coastweek/Xinhua-393 words

The British government on Monday relaxed its travel advisory against Kenya in the latest move that will encourage more visitors to the east African nation. A brief statement from the British embassy in Nairobi said the government has removed its advice to its nationals travelling to low income areas in Nairobi except Eastleigh area which is inhabited by Kenyans of Somali origin and which has been a scene of grenade attacks in the past. “Britain has removed advice against all but essential travel to low income areas of Nairobi, except the Eastleigh area,” the advisory reads. Somali Port Workers Protest Turkish Firm Take-Over of Port

30 Sept- Source: VOA- 410 words

Turkey has been a key ally for the federal Somali government and with major financial assistance from Ankara, development in Mogadishu is taking off at a fast pace. But not all are happy with the Turkish influence in Somalia. Port workers in Mogadishu staged recent protests to keep their jobs as Turkish company takes over. But the Somali workers lack the education to operate the new technology coming in. Port workers at the Mogadishu seaport have been staging demonstrations outside parliament since the federal government handed over the port’s management to a Turkish firm. Under the new ownership, Al Bayrak Company will manage the port for the next 20 years and will give the government 55 percent of all the proceeds from the port.

Yesterday evening the story broke of a young 15 year old Somali girl who was reported missing since last Wednesday and who may be on her way to Syria.  As expected the mainstream media has jumped onto the radicalised, jihadist, extremist headlines, without any such solid proof being presented, other than the young girl had left for Turkey, with another 17 year girl who was from London. Assistant Chief Constable Louisa Rolfe said there were indications the girl “may have been radicalised” and that “Our priority is to find her before she crosses the border to Syria and make sure she is safe.” “We must all be vigilant and ready to spot the signs of radicalisation. “Often, young Muslims who go to Syria can be naïve and don’t recognise that they are being sucked into joining extremist groups. “This is not about criminalising these young people, it’s about preventing tragedies.”
