Date set for Kenya-Somalia boundary case

21 Oct – Source: The Star – 371 Words

It is now official that Kenya and Somalia are headed for a legal fight at the International Court of Justice regarding the maritime delimitation of the Indian Ocean. Just days after Kenya formally responded to the suit by Somalia, the Court’s President, Peter Tomka, has set a date for the initial pleadings of the high stakes case.

The Star has established that war-torn Somalia has up to July 13 next year to formally submit its claims to the huge swathe of maritime territory in dispute, considered to be rich in oil deposits and fish stocks.

The fixing of the dates now means that Kenya may have lost an attempt to challenge ICJ jurisdiction to hear the case. “The President of the Court made the Order having regard to the views of the Parties. The subsequent procedure has been reserved for further decision,” a Court official said.

The court did not grant bail to another Shabelle journalist who appeared in court with Mr Malik. Instead, Ahmed Hassan – a Somali citizen – was remanded in custody, reports the BBC’s Mohamed Moalimu from Mogadishu.

Somaliland inspired by Scotland and Catalonia independence campaigns

21 Oct – Source: The Guardian – 772 Words

The recent high-profile campaigns for Scottish and Catalonian independence have buoyed hopes that Somaliland could soon gain independence from Somalia, according to the president of the self-declared country.

Somaliland is viewed by the international community as a territory within Somalia – a nation that is struggling to emerge from more than two decades of civil war. However, the former British protectorate boasts more than 20 years of relative peace and security as well as untapped oil reserves and mineral deposits.

Its president, Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud Silanyo, said he was encouraged by other independence movements and hoped that boosting investment in Somaliland’s energy and agricultural sectors would spark an economic rebirth that could help it towards independence. “Other countries’ search for recognition, like Catalonia and Scotland, is something we find [inspiring],” he said. “We are, in our own way, also seeking our independence.”

Failed Initiatives befoul Somalia’s future

21 Oct – Source: alshahid.net – 767 Words

Despite unprecedented level of foreign interventions particularly since 2000, Somalia lingers as a failed state which is threat to the international peace and security. The installation of permanent federal government in 2012 and the victories over terrorist group Al Shabab did not change Somalia’s misfortune because Somalia’ future is befouled by the outcomes of failed peace processes or initiatives. Foreign actors decided to welcome and applaud disreputable and lately unconstitutional agreements that sully Somali politics. They wittingly or unwittingly are deepening Somalia’s crisis.

Generally there has been common consensus that the peace and reconciliation conferences sponsored by the international community from 2000 to today have failed and did not produce positive durable results. But, donors and neighboring countries continue to claim success and progress on the basis of disreputable agreements that became instrumental and justifications for prolonged foreign interventions.

In 2010, Conciliation Resources (CR) – UK International NGO- in collaboration with Interpeace published a review of the International peace processes in Somalia. The review edited by Mark Bradbury and Sally Healy was titled “Whose peace is it anyway?” The central conclusion of review is, “Nearly two decades of foreign interventions have failed to build peace or a viable state. International engagement has served to deepen the humanitarian and political crisis in Somalia.” This well documented conclusion is still valid as of today.
