Egyptian Prime Minister, Dr. Essam Sharaf received the former Ghanaian President and AU Envoy to Somalia Jerry John Rawlings, who is visiting Cairo currently. The guest expressed his and AU appreciation on the Egyptian support to Somalia who are suffering since long period. The former president hailed role of the Egyptian educational mission to Somalia, and efforts to improve the educational process especially with females, as well as the Egyptian technical cooperation provided to Somalia in various fields including the health sector. From his side, Dr. Essam confirmed that the official and popular support to Somalia expresses Egypt’s keenness on supporting Somalia, confirming that Egypt’s policy upon revolution shows keenness on supporting relations with the African continent, along to supporting the political communications among them.
The meeting tackled means to contribute in settling policy in Somalia, and Dr. Essam expressed Egypt’s readiness to provide support to AU in solving their problems. Dr. Essam called the former president to visit Cairo again for more talks on the Somali file. It is worth noting that Egyptian aids reached EGP 30 million including medical aids provided by the armed forces, government, NGOs, and charities.

Two killed after Somali pirates come under attack

Unknown armed men have attacked some Somali pirates on the ground in central Somalia, killing at least two and wounding three others, reports said on Wednesday. The death and injuries occurred after the pirates’ luxury car came under fire from the armed men whose identities were not known. The deadly incident took place in parts of Galka’yo town.

Somali military seizes explosive devices in Mogadishu

Sudanese delegates arrive in Mogadishu

Somali militants order schools to teach Arabic

Somalia’s al Shabaab rebels have banned English from schools in the southern port city of Kismayu they control and demanded teachers switch the curriculum to include Arabic and Islamic studies. The latest edict shows the disconnect between the al Qaeda-allied rebels intent on stamping harsh laws on areas they control, and Somali leaders who have agreed to hold an election next year even though the internationally backed government barely controls any territory beyond the capital.

Somali pirates free Danish family, crew

Somali pirates have freed a Danish family of five and two crew captured while sailing off the Horn of Africa in February after receiving a $3 million ransom, a pirate told Reuters on Wednesday. Armed pirates captured the family — Jan Quist Johansen, his wife and three children — and two crew members when they hijacked the group’s 43-foot sailboat, SY ING, about 600 miles east of Somalia. ‘The seven Danes are well considering the circumstances,’ the Danish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
