TFG soldiers execute three alleged murderers in Gedo

TFG soldiers in south-west Somali region of Gedo have reportedly executed three men accused of killing El-Adde’s district commissioner two days ago. The three faced a firing squad at El-Adde town, some 60 kilometres from the area’s regional headquarter, Garbaharey, after they were found in possession of pistols.
Mogadishu will host constitutional and presidential election conferences

Speaking at the 52nd anniversary of the Somali national force this week, Somali president Sharif Sheikh Ahmed said that the security of Mogadishu was completely achieved and that the capital can now host both meetings for the constitution’s authorization and the presidential election.
Somaliland passes central banking law

The Somaliland government has passed a central banking law that allows the breakaway region in north west Somalia to attract foreign investors. The law which was passed by the Somaliland parliament establishes a central bank in Somaliland, which for much of its existence operated without a functioning central bank. The central bank allows foreign investors eyeing the potential oil wealthy region a chance to invest.
Herders, al Shabaab clash in parts of Gedo

At least two people were killed and several others were injured after local herders clashed with al Shabaab fighters on the outskirt of El-Adde settlement, Gedo region. Reports say the clash occurred after armed herders attacked al Shabaab militants for allegedly confiscating their animals.

Draft constitution ready, says Somalia prime minister

Somalia’s prime minister has said that a draft constitution has been finalised, bringing to a near end an eight-year search for an acceptable document and edging the strife-torn country towards a permanent government. The readiness of the draft constitution signifies that the TFG is close to being replaced by a permanent, constitution-based one.
Pirates extend payment deadline for release of MV Albedo again

The pirates who hijacked the Dubai ship MV Albedo have extended the deadline for the crew’s US$2.85 million (Dh10.4m) ransom by another three days. Relatives of the 22 crew members, who have been held for 17 months, had hoped to defer the payment until next month, but the Somali raiders have demanded the ransom by tomorrow.

For most people, any associations with Somalia likely involve warlords, pirates and the ravages of famine. Or maybe K’naan. News broadcasts bring headlines of terrorism in Mogadishu by Al-Shabaab militants, or of outlaws taking hostages on any boat that dares veer near Somali waters.
Rarely, however, do we hear human stories about the hope or humor of the Somali people, which is what makes the short film Asad–screening at the Tribeca Film Festival this week–so refreshing.
