The United Nations Security Council warned Al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab rebels on Thursday against trying to impede the peace process in Somalia. The 15 council members hailed the adoption of a new provisional constitution earlier this month by the Somali National Constituent Assembly, saying it marked an “important milestone” in the Eastern African nation’s transition toward “more stable and accountable governance.

Somalia’s former prime minister returns to Mogadishu

Former prime minister and a presidential aspirant Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo was received by hundreds of his supporters in the Aden Ade Airport in the capital, Mogadishu. According to our reporter in Mogadishu, two protesters were killed after government soldiers opened fire to disperse hundreds of Farmajo supporters.In a brief statement, the former prime minister condemned the attack and called his supporters to stay calm.


Somali candidates form new party for presidential candidates

Somali presidential candidates formed a new party to open a joint front for the coming August 20th date. At least 13 candidates have joined forces. They will support one of them to clinch the top seat.


Prime Minister Ali holds crisis meeting with top security officials

Somali Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed has called for an emergency meeting with top security officials following the attack on Farmajo supporters where two people including a police officer was killed.The meeting which is a said to be a closed door held at the prime ministers’ office was reportedly aimed at discussing security in the entire city and the recent incident where military officers attacked the immediate former Prime Minister’s supporters gathering in Sayidka Square.


Somalia’s Former Prime Minister supporters’ shot at rally

Former Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmajo’s supporters were fired upon allegedly by Transitional Federal Government troops in Mogadishu on Thursday, Garowe Online reports. Farmajo who is a candidate for the Somali presidential elections arrived in Mogadishu Thursday afternoon and was welcomed by his supporters. According to local sources in Mogadishu, Farmajo’s supporters including some TFG soldiers who came to welcome the former Prime Minister were randomly fired upon by men dressed in TFG forces’ uniform. At least two people were killed and three others injured including one TFG soldier and one civilian.

International Islamic Relief Organization (IIRO), affiliate to Islamic World League, has distributed a new relief assistance for the masses of displaced people in some camps in the capital of Somalia Mogadishu.The aid consisted of 120 thousand kilograms of various foodstuffs.The relief assistance came in the light of the tragic situation experienced by the displaced people in Somalia cause of the ongoing civil war in the country, IIRO reported.


Somalia has full month free of piracy, says agency

For the first time since 2007 there have been no successful piracy attacks off the coast of Somalia.The last hijack was on June 19, when a fishing dhow was seized, and no ship has been fired upon or a boarding attempted since June 26, when a Maltese-flagged cargo ship was attacked, according to data from the International Maritime Bureau (IMB).

Somali gov’t says to tighten security in Mogadishu for upcoming vote

The Somali government on Thursday said it was beefing up security in the run up to the presidential contest due in less than two week’s time. Somali Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali told state media that security in the capital will be strengthened to create peaceful environment for the upcoming contest for the presidency and the post of parliamentary speaker and deputies.
