The is welcome news for Somalia’s internationally-backed authorities, who have struggled to extend their reach far beyond the capital Mogadishu and are also fighting the Al-Qaeda-inspired Shebab militia. The EU must intervene to help journalists in Somalia

29 Aug – Source: Euractiv News – 156 words

Somali journalists are under assault. Not only is the country one of the deadliest places for media workers, the year-old government is weighing a restrictive media law. The European Union, one of the African’s country’s most important supporters, needs to be more forceful in ensuring a free media environment in Somalia, writes Alison Bethel McKenzie. Alison Bethel McKenzie is executive director of the International Press Institute in Vienna. I am near certain that when Libaan Abdullahi Farah decided to become a journalist, he didn’t think it would lead to his death. But on 7 July, that’s exactly what happened. The news of the murder of Farah (also known as Liban Qaran) is horrific, but what is even more tragic is that he is one of at least seven Somali media workers killed so far this year, putting the African nation in the same league as Syria, Pakistan and Egypt as the world’s deadliest places for journalists.

“Indeed, for many countries, nomads – recast as intrepid entrepreneurs – could be the key to securing a prosperous future”.

The New-Model Nomad

29 Aug – Source: Project-syndicate.org – 739 words

One of my earliest childhood memories is of swimming in a small gully near my grandmother’s home in Yaaq Bari Wayne, a dusty collection of tin-roofed adobe buildings huddled together in the plains of southern Somalia’s Bay region. After the Gu rains, the gully became a deep triangular cleft cut into the ground, filled with muddy water. Children gathered like ants to spilled sugar, jumping off ledges and diving into its murky depths with screams and whoops of excitement. Many were children of nomadic herders, who moved south in May and June in search of better pastures. When they arrived, brown domes made of crisscrossed branches and layers of multicolored mats would appear like crowds of dappled beetles on the outskirts of town. For me, the nomad was a romantic figure, akin to the American cowboy of the Wild West. In the world’s harshest environment, they trekked hundreds of kilometers, surviving on camel milk and dried meat, with all of their possessions strapped to a camel’s back.
