New Somali parliamentarians meet for the first time

Members of the new federal parliament of Somalia met yesterday for the first time while presided over by speaker Mohamed Sheikh Osman Jawari. The meeting which was held at General Kahiye police Academy in Mogadishu was attended by more than 20 parliamentarians. Prof Jawari told Parliamentarians to set aside ethnicity and work for the Somali people without any favoritism.

Former Somaliland Minister of Information and National Guidance Abdurrahman Yusuf Du’ale better known as Boobe told Geeska Africa journal that he was fired after having refused a request from Somaliland president Ahmed Mohamud Silanyo and his wife to withdraw his decision to dismiss officials in his ministry.

Kibaki visits riot-hit Mombasa

Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki arrived in the port city of Mombasa on Thursday after days of violence sparked by the killing of a radical Muslim cleric, as authorities insisted security has been restored. Hundreds of armed security officers have been deployed in Mombasa to quash stone-throwing rioters who took to the streets in their hundreds following the assassination of preacher Aboud Rogo Mohammed on Monday.

Mr. Aden Ahmed Hersi, a government spokesman in the Juba regions has told the media that pro-government forces have almost surrounded the port town of Kismayu. “Kenya navy is just 15 miles away,” said Mr Hersi. He added that apart from land forces, Kismayu was under air surveillance. “We are committed to remove the black banner (al Shabaab’s symbol) and raise Somalia’s blue colour flag all over Jubaland,” vowed the spokesman.

TA troops help secure future for Somalia

TA troops from Northern Ireland have been helping bring stability to Somalia by training African soldiers due to be deployed there. They have spent a week in nearby Uganda training members of its Army who will become part of the African Union Mission in Mogadishu. Like Afghanistan, Somalia is seen by the British Government as one of the biggest threats facing the UK.

Somalia: A Ray of hope For A future without fear

The Somalia capital of Mogadishu is bustling with optimism. Reconstruction of the city has resumed, people are rebuilding homes, businesses are reopening; even streets lights are being restored. People have been taking time to venture to the beach to celebrate a new beginning for the city and the rest of Somalia. Even on the political front, Somalis are showing signs of civil political discourse. Discussion of an interim constitution has surmounted many stumbling blocks, and the document has been passed in parliament. New members have been chosen and a new speaker and deputy speaker of parliament has been elected. This paves the way for normal presidential elections. Many Somalis have returned to Mogadishu to be part of this exciting new beginning for Somalia.
