Blast rocks Mogadishu’s Bakara Market

A hand thrown grenade was hurled at Security officers on patrol in Bakara Market in Mogadishu. The incident took place in the gold and jewelry section of the market. Several people, mostly civilians, are said to have sustained serious injuries in the attack which took place in broad daylight. Several arrests have already been made though it’s not yet clear if the perpetrators were among those detained.

Himan & Heb leader on peace mission in Galgadud

The president of Himan and Heb administration in central Somalia Mohamed Abdullahi Adan is visiting parts of Galgadud region to negotiate a peace deal between rival clans. Speaking to Bar-kulan before travelling to Balaldhere and Marer areas where there have been deadly fights between two clan militias, Adan said his mission is to preach peace and create awareness among the locals on the importance of peaceful coexistence. More than 30 people have died and dozen others sustained injuries in clan affiliated clashes over land disputes.


Yacht crews cautioned against traveling near Somali coast

Yacht crews have been cautioned to beware of the continuing threat of piracy attacks off the Somali coast. According to a report released by The Africa Report, Admiral Potts pointed out that nearly every recorded attack on a yacht in the region has led to the crew being taken hostage and moved to Somalia and huge ransoms being demanded.


Mogadishu municipality gets new fire engines

The Mogadishu Municipality will soon receive three new fire engines relieving anxiety on residents in cases of fire outbreaks, according to Mayor Tarsan. In an exclusive interview with Bar-kulan, the mayor said the council bought two fire engines from Britain after a Leicester-based company offered a discount while the third engine was donated by an aid agency and will be shipped through Dubai. He said the two engines in UK will be ferried from Southampton 19th of this month to Somalia to enhance the council’s preparedness capability.

FAO seeks US$443 million for Somalia recovery

It could be recalled that in 2011, a combination of years of conflict, drought and high food prices drove over 4 million people, half of Somalia’s population into acute food insecurity leaving tens of thousands dead, especially children under five. According to a statement issued in Nairobi on Thursday, FAO is seeking US$375 million and a separate US$68 million for the next three years. Although 2.12 million Somalis are still in crisis, the country is on the path to recovery. Working with national and international partners, FAO’s aid strategy is to help farmers and herders rebuild long-term resilience, the statement said.

Turkey extends great support to reconstruction of Somalia

Turkish President Abdullah Gul said on Wednesday that Turkey extended a great support to the reconstruction of Somalia with its public institutions and people, a great example to the international community. Gul and his Somali counterpart Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud held a joint press conference after holding a tete-a-tete meeting and chairing meetings between delegations in Ankara. A new era has begun in Somalia, Gul said


15 beneficiaries of international protection depart for USA

15 persons from Somalia, Eritrea and Sudan all single adult men, except for one couple, granted protection in Malta left yesterday to start a new life in the United States, under the US Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP). On arrival, they will be assisted by NGOs in the U.S.A. to proceed to their final destinations in various states. This latest departure brings the total of beneficiaries of international protection who were resettled to the United States from Malta since 2007 to 1,098 migrants. Since the start of the USRRP in 2008, the number of beneficiaries of protection resettled to the United States amounts to 1,070.

The UN will also reinforce its presence (including political presence) in the regions. Most importantly, however, is that the UN will heed the President’s call to “come out of the bunker” and adjust its security management in a way that allows for much more intensive interaction with the government and civil society and reducing its dependence on highly visible security convoys.”

What Next for the United Nations in Somalia?

Following the euphoria surrounding the end of the Roadmap process and the creation of a new and credible government in Somalia, the United Nations has just completed a “Strategic Review” that aims to create a new architecture that will enable the World Body to respond to the changing realities in Somalia. Simultaneously, the African Union is undertaking a review of its own, to align AMISOM with the evolving situation on the ground.
