Galmudug President Responds To No-confidence Motion Against Him

09 January – Source: Jowhar.com – 110 Words

Galmudug President Abdikarim Hussein Guled has hit back at MPs who tabled a no-confidence motion against him, brushing aside allegations against his leadership which led to the motion. President Guled urged the MPs to drop the motion saying that it was not the appropriate time to submit a motion as the region was facing challenging situations that need concerted efforts to address them.

He called on the MPs to take part in the rescue operation being extended to the victims of the prevailing drought in Galmudug. Over 50 MPs of the Galmudug parliament filed a no-confidence motion against the embattled president accusing him of incompetence during his term in office.

Somali Government Pledges To Properly Regulate Private Security Forces In Mogadishu

Somali government has said it would ensure that private security forces are properly regulated following the incident where bodyguards escorting a senator killed a civilian driver on Friday night. The Ministry of Internal Security Affairs has sent stern warning to private security companies utilized by politicians and other companies.

“Those people who are driving expensive luxury cars with private security guards have to abide by the law. You may see someone driving such vehicles and committing acts of harassment,  the government will never turn its back on these lawbreakers,” said the ministry’s spokesperson, Abdikamil Moalim.

On Sunday, a civilian driver was killed after bodyguards escorting Senator Hussein Ali Hajji opened fire on his vehicle. The shooting took place at Dabka junction in Mogadishu, at around 7:30 p.m. local time. The police managed to capture the killer on the spot following the murder of the civilian driver and he is currently being questioned at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), according to the police.

Africa And Asia To Receive Emergency EU Humanitarian Assistance

08 January – Source: Reliefweb – 482 Words

With the humanitarian situation drastically deteriorating in a number of countries and regions, the EU is releasing urgent assistance. A total of €28.7 million have been allocated to respond to the most pressing humanitarian needs in Somalia, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Egypt and Libya.

“Humanitarian needs worldwide reached record levels last year. We are mobilising the last reserves of the Commission’s 2016 budget to help cover the most urgent needs, in particular in countries where the humanitarian response is underfunded. We will continue to support the most vulnerable people worldwide with EU aid in 2017,” said Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides.

The biggest share of the package, €10 million, will go to humanitarian assistance in Somalia, for which the United Nations launched an urgent appeal last month. The country is currently facing a severe and worsening drought that has left additional hundreds of thousands of people short of food and water, while five million Somalis – more than 40 per cent of the population – already lack access to sufficient food.

€8 million of the package will address the needs of the increasing numbers of displaced people and recent returnees in Afghanistan, who have been particularly hard hit by the sub-zero winter – as well as vulnerable Afghan refugees in Iran.

Humanitarian assistance of €3.9 million will be channelled to populations affected by conflict in Myanmar. At least 30 000 people have been newly displaced by recent violence, and some 22 000 have fled across the border into Bangladesh. An estimated 14 000 people have crossed into China and a further 3 500 are displaced within the Northern Shan State. All need urgent humanitarian assistance.

Rising Somalia Moots Plan To Recognize Top Businesses

09 January – Source: Mediamax Networks – 371 Words

After decades of war, Somalia has risen and it keeps going. Business is thriving and the economy is growing, a fact even the World Bank acknowledged in its report this year, Transition Amidst Risk. In the report released in April, the World Bank says the country has the potential to overcome “immense challenges” to attain meaningful reforms towards sustainable development.

“So far, there are positive signs that the economy is responding: Somalis are returning from abroad, shops are opening, new financial institutions have been licensed, and property markets are booming. Somalia is at a turning point. Creating a workable system of government will be central to its recovery,” says the report.

And one consortium in Somalia wants to make this big news and change the negative perceptions people have about Somalia. “The news is full of ‘a bomb here and an explosion there’; but little is said about ‘a business here and a success there’.

We want to showcase the rise of Somalia’s business,” says the Somalia Investor Magazine Consortium. To achieve this, the group is organising the Somali Annual Business Awards (Saba), the first of its kind in the country, with the event slated for the end of this year.

Saba, a non-profit initiative, aims to motivate and improve the Somali business community by publicising positive stories and successes of Somalis through a business award system. “Somalia prides itself in being the first country to have efficient and fast world money transfers. Business is thriving in cities and big towns. Somalis have inborn entrepreneurship talent, hence Saba aims to uncover and discover more of this hidden talent,” says the consortium.
