7,000 small arms yet to be claimed, says Kenyan IG

02 Jul- Source: Star- 760 words

More than 7,000 small arms used in escorting marine vessels into the country are still under police custody, Inspector general of police David Kimaiyo has said. The assorted arms were surrendered to the police for safe custody upon arrival of vessels at the port of Mombasa. According to Kimaiyo, vessels with private escort have their security team surrender their arms before going into the main land. Most specialized private security companies providing armed maritime security escorts for vessels usually have their men alight upon arrival in Mombasa. This is to allow the offloading of cargo. Piracy off the coast of Somalia has been a threat to international shipping since the second phase of the Somali civic war in the early 21st century.

The Somali government wants the Kenya Defence Forces to immediately withdraw from the port town of Kismayo.

On Sunday at a press conference in Mogadishu , deputy Information minister Abdishakur Ali Mire called for “a more neutral African Union force.”

A press release from the Prime Minister’s office said that “the AMISOM Section Two forces (KDF) supported one side of the two fighting factions” during three days of fighting recently for control of the port.

“Amisom Section Two forces purposefully arrested government appointed division 43 SNA commander, Col. Abbas Ibrahim Gure,” Abdishakur Mire said.

“We are also informed that there was a targeted offensive against civilians and the SNA command center in Kismayo by the Amisom Section Two forces, which is unfortunate.”

The minister called for “the immediate replacement of AMISOM Section Two forces to a more neutral African Union force” as well as the release of Col Gure.

Why Somalia Matters

02 July- Source: Reason-1107 Words

At one point in The World’s Most Dangerous Place, his exhaustively reported chronicle of the Somali nation, Scottish journalist James Fergusson interviews a Somali restaurant owner in Minneapolis about the upcoming Tom Hanks “pirate” film, Captain Phillips. “I can tell you what this movie is going to be already,” Abdi Ahmed tells Fergusson. “They will have a bunch of American people kidnapped, and Tom Hanks will save them, and a bunch of skinny black guys will get killed.” In other words, why bother to pay attention to any of it? Indeed, that’s how many people—even I, who spent many years reporting from Somalia—have regarded the place of late.
