Benadir regional administration rehabilitates roads in Mogadishu

Benadir regional administration and the African Union Mission in Somalia on Thursday embarked on an ambitious exercise to rehabilitate and clean roads in parts of Mogadishu.

Construction of devastated parts of the road between Adan Adde International Airport and KM4 junction has already started, with construction workers also removing piles of garbage lying on the road.

Thousands arrested in one-day operation in Mogadishu

The largest mass arrest operation ever in Mogadishu was launched yesterday by the national security agency and the police forces of the TFG searching for al Shabaab members.

The operation which started early on Thursday morning continued until the afternoon as more than 3,000 people were arrested, the National Security Agency NSA confirmed.

Somaliland house of elders to discuss local elections-related rules

The House Of Elders of the Somaliland republic was given letters about the rules of the municipality elections.The rules were already discussed and amended by the House of Representatives after the president requested them. Somali President visits Rwanda

Mwingi police arrest ‘TFG soldier’ heading to Nairobi

Police in Mwingi yesterday arrested a man and his father who claimed to be a Transitional Federal Government soldier in Somalia and his father on their way to Nairobi. The man, identified as Ahmed Adan and his father Abdi Mohamed, were flushed out of a Nairobi-bound bus that was travelling from Garissa.

US hits Shabaab network with new sanctions

The United States placed sanctions Thursday on six alleged backers of Al-Qaeda-linked al Shabaab rebels in Somalia, naming them as two Eritrean government officials, a Sudanese national and three Kenyans.

The US Treasury said the sanctions, freezing any US-located assets of the six and forbidding any US business or individual from having dealings with them, were aimed at helping halt the conflict in Somalia and efforts to dismantle al Shabaab.


Satellites monitor Kenyan-Somali border

Kenya’s military is using satellites to patrol the country’s borders.

The satellite surveillance systems are monitoring both Kiiwayu Island and the Kenyan-Somali border to detect any suspected al Shabaab insurgents attempting to cross into Kenya.

The surveillance systems were established following reports that some suspected al Shabaab militias fled into the area and were allegedly being harbored by locals, The Star newspaper reported Wednesday.

SOMALIA could give its Eastern Africa neighbours a run for their money in tourism business if its internal conflict and piracy problems are contained, a UN report on regional sustainable tourism shows. The report by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa titled a study on the challenges and opportunities for tourism development says the country has the largest coastal belt in Africa, architectural heritage and beautiful pristine beaches that are great for tourism.
