Drone crashes in southern Somalia, may have been shot down

A suspected U.S. reconnaissance drone crashed on Tuesday in southern Somalia, where African forces are fighting al Shabaab insurgents, the rebels and the provincial governor said. Lower Shabelle region governor Abdikadir Mohamed Nur said that al Shabaab militants had shot at the aircraft over the town of Bulamareer for several hours before it crashed.

Somali president and his delegation return to Mogadishu

Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his delegation has retuned to Mogadishu, the Somali capital after attending the celebrations of the 50thanniversary of the continental organization of the African Union. The Somali president has also attended the 21st ordinary session of the general assembly of the organization.Speaking in a news conference at the airport, Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamed has given details about the recent 50th anniversary of the African Union organization. The president on the other hand welcomed the communiqué by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) that urged the government to lead reconciliation conference to key stakeholders in the Jubba region with a view to chart out a roadmap on the establishment of Interim administration and formation of a permanent regional administration with IGAD playing a supportive role in line with the constitution.

Somali Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon has welcomed the business community as the engine of growth for the Somali economy as investors gathered in Nairobi for the two-day Somali Reconstruction and Investment Conference. “Not long ago this event would have been unthinkable,” said the Prime Minister. “Today it sends a very powerful message to the world that Somalia is back and we are open for business. We welcome investors in all sectors of our economy.”


Gunmen killed 7 people in Mudug region

Reports from Labo-El settlement around 20KM about Kalabeyr in Mudug region in Central of Somalia say armed men have attacked family including father and Mother with their children in Labo-El area on Tuesdaynight. Reports say that family was killed by the gunmen and subsequently buried in that field. This attack is the first one that took place in Mudug region and the residents in Labo-El expressed deep concern over the accident.

Somali Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon called on Somalis to protect their children from the ravages of polio in a new vaccination campaign. “There is no treatment for polio. There is only prevention, which is the whole point of this vaccination,” the Prime Minister said. “I urge all Somalis to take advantage of this opportunity and have their children vaccinated. This is not an option, it’s a necessity.”


Heavy Bombardments rock the Kismayo Airport

Heavy artilleries were fired at the airport which hosted the government delegation at Kismayo airport, the capital city of the lower Juba regions. Militia men believed to be members of the outlawed al Shabaab militia bombarded the Kismayo airport which is currently hosting a government delegation consisting of defense minister Abdi Hakin Haji Mohamud Fiqi. Government and AMISOM troops in Kismayo retaliated with rockets and gunfire to scare away the invaders as news sources confirm.

Garissa police ‘knew of plan to attack AP camps’

Details are emerging of the security lapse which led to the twin Saturday attacks in Garissa County which led to the death of five people. On Saturday evening, a 50-man heavily armed al Shabaab gang, who claimed responsibility on their Twitter account, crossed over into Kenya, and launched a simultaneous attack on the AP camp in Damajaley village and a border patrol unit police camp at Abdi Sugow village in Liboi. According to the Garissa Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims secretary general Abdullahi Salat and Hamud Sheikh, a member of the Garissa county peace committee, prior information of the impending attack was availed to the government two weeks before it happened.


Oman leader Receives Written Message from Somalia’s President

King of Oman, Sultan Qaboos Bin Said has received a written message from President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud of the Federal Republic of Somalia.The message was handed over to Sayyid Fahd bin Mahmoud al-Said, Deputy Prime Minister for the Council of Ministers when he received here today Mohammed Noor Gaal, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Envoy of the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia who conveyed greetings of the Somalia’s President along with his best wishes to His Majesty, Monarch of the country. The Envoy reviewed the efforts being exerted by the Somalia’s government to rebuild the destruction caused by the domestic war during the last two decades, conveying thanks of Somalia and its leadership for the Sultanate’s support to them in the past and at the present.

Bickering Continues Over Who Controls Somali Port City

Today al Shabaab militants are nowhere to be seen in the Somali port city of Kismayo, which was once their financial hub and their last major stronghold in Somalia. But those who united to defeat their common enemy in the city are now fighting for control of liberated areas and for who gets the big share of seaport revenue. Much of Somalia’s two decades of brutal war was characterized by the fight for control of territories and strategic towns that produce clan pride and financial muscle. The fight is still going on today over the newly created Jubaland region in southern Somalia, where at least three different men have claimed to be president of a new Jubaland state.

Somalia opened its first investment conference in the Kenyan capital Nairobi on Tuesday to showcase opportunities that exist in the Horn of Africa nation. Participants at the conference said Somalia will be the next frontier for rapid investments across all sectors of the economy as the Horn of Africa state enjoys relative peace and stability after two decades of turmoil.

Somalia surgeons: under the knife in Mogadishu – audio slideshow

Dr Nima Hassan, one of very few female surgeons working in Somalia, deals with caesarian sections, bomb wounds and other injuries at Banadir hospital in Mogadishu, as AMISOM attempt to enforce peace on the surrounding streets and allow aid to reach Somalis. The hospital also has to deal with cases of malnutrition and cholera.
