Somali president arrives in London for conference

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud and his delegation arrived on Monday in London, UK to attend the international conference on Somalia sponsored by the Governments of Somalia and Britain. Somali President and his entourage were received by officials from British government. The officials accompanying the President include Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Fawzia Yusuf Haji Adam and Somali Defense Minister Abdihakim Haji Mahamud Fiqi, Minister of State for the presidency of Somalia, Farah Sheikh Abdiqadir and others.

Mogadishu roads blocked again day after deadly suicide explosion

The main roads of Somalia capital, Mogadishu were blocked for second time in two weeks following a deadly suicide car bomb in the capital on Sunday.. Early on Monday, hundreds of security forces were deployed into the roads including the main road that links the airport and the presidential palace. Many government offices and main hotels were also cordoned off with heavy police presence.
Somaliland Administration keen to bolster ties with Ethiopia

Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn met with the President of Somaliland, Ahmed Mohammed Silanyo on Saturday (May 4) in Addis Ababa. On the occasion, Prime Minister Hailemariam, underlined Ethiopia‘s interest in fostering stronger relations with Somaliland administration, based on mutual benefit. He said “Ethiopia is ready to further bolster its relations with Somaliland administration in the areas of trade, education, capacity building and port services.”
Somalia’s new police, NSA chiefs take offices

The new Somali police chief and the head of the national security and intelligence agency took their offices on Monday after they have been officially sworn in on Sunday, RBC Radio reports. The two officials were endorsed by the country’s cabinet ministers during their weekly meeting on Thursday. Gen Bashir Mohamed Jama was appointed as the new Somalia National Security and Intelligence Chief and Gen Abdihakim Dahir Sa’id “Saacid”, who was deputy police commander was promoted to be new police chief.

Uhuru arrives in London for Somalia talks

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has arrived in the United Kingdom for the London Conference on Somalia which is scheduled to take place on Tuesday. The plane carrying the president and his entourage touched down at Heathrow airport at 6.40am local time. The conference, which is co-chaired by the United Kingdom and the shaky government of Somalia, will be held at Lancaster House.
Iranian terror suspects jailed for life

Two Iranians who were last week found guilty of possessing 15 kg (33 pounds) of explosives and planning to carry out bombings in the country have been sentenced to life imprisonment. Ahmad Mohammed and Sayed Mousavi were arrested in Nairobi last June with the explosive substances . Kenyan Investigators said at the time it was unclear whether the pair had ties to al Qaeda-linked militants in Somalia or were part of another network.
UN mission to be set up in Somalia

The Security Council has voted unanimously to establish the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia. The mission, to be known as UNSOM, will be based in the capital Mogadishu for an initial period of 12 months. The mandate of the new mission includes supporting peace and reconciliation and assisting the government and the existing African Union peacekeeping force, AMISOM, with advice on peace and state building.

At the thriving seaport in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, the aroma of lemons drowns out the smell of ship’s fuel. The dried fruits, packed into hundreds of sacks, are being offloaded from trucks and hoisted by crane on to a cargo vessel for export. The ship will eventually make its way to the Arab Gulf states.
“The pay is poor, but at least there’s more work now,” says a porter by the name of Alasow, taking a breather from the back-breaking work.
Turkey condemns bomb attack in Somalia

Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the bomb attack which was staged in Somali capital Mogadishu. The ministry expressed sorrow over the casualties in the attack. Turkey strongly condemns the bomb attack which happened on one of the most crowded streets of Mogadishu, said the ministry, and offered condolences to the relatives of victims as well as speed recovery for the wounded ones. Al Qaeda linked Somali militant group of al Shabaab claimed the responsibility of the attack which killed 13 people and injured 25 others.

Foreign Minister Ahmet DavutoÄŸlu will represent Turkey at an international conference on Somalia hosted by the UK capital city of London on Tuesday. When al Shabaab terrorists attacked the Mogadishu courthouse on April 14, they were attempting to reverse the country’s dramatic trajectory of progress. They failed. Although there was a tragic loss of life, the courts are re-opening and life is already back to normal. I visited the courthouse shortly after the attack and spoke to survivors in hospital. Nowhere did I see defeat – or anything like it. Instead I saw the typical Somali resilience that is one of my people’s greatest characteristics.
