Traditional elder at conference says ‘he was mistreated by police’

A traditional elder from southern Somalia Suldan Faqi Sayid said that he was mistreated at the traditional elder meeting in Mogadishu. Suldan Faqi, one of the 135 traditional elders invited to Mogadishu to take part in choosing the National Constituent Assembly (NCA) said that he was told to leave the building where the meeting was taking place by police on Sunday.
“I was denied entry by policemen guarding the conference hall and told to leave the area,” said Suldan Faqi.

Beledweyne finally gets elected mayor

Locals in central Somali town of Beledweyne have for the first time in two decades voted for a new mayor, reports say. In a hotly contested mayoral election, Mohamed Hassan Nuriye garnered 135 votes against two of his rivals who got 11 and 8 respectively.
Two hundred delegates from all walks of life took part in the mayoral election. His deputy was also voted in after getting 147 out of the 200 votes.

The new TFG minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Hussein Sh. Mohamud has taken over the post from his predecessor, Mohamed Mohamud Haji in an occasion held in Mogadishu yesterday.
Former minister of Agriculture and livestock, Mohamed Mohmud Haji who delivered a speech at the occasion held in the ministry of Agriculture and livestock said that he was very pleased to hand the post to new minister, Hussein Sh. Mohamud and asked Allah to make that responsibility easy.

Al Shabaab, Ahlu Sunna clash in parts of El-bur district

A deadly fight between Ahlu Sunna and al Shabaab militant group has on Monday erupted in parts of El-bur district, reports say. The fighting reportedly broke out after heavily armed militants ambushed an Ahlu Sunna convoy in an area between Wara-dumale and Dagah-yale areas of El-bur district, Galgadud region.
Although the exact number of casualties on both sides still remains unknown, Ahlu Sunna’s area district security boss Abdi Hassan Mohamed claimed victory, saying they killed seven militants fighters and seized weapons.
Shabelle administration pledges Somali people to boost its broadcasting services

Abdimalik Yusuf Mohamoud, the chairman and CEO of Shabelle said that Shabelle was committed and now is committed to continue its broadcasting related services despite all fighting and conflict.
‘Kenya police commit abuses against refugees’ HRW says

The Kenyan security forces have been alleged of committing human rights violations against Somalis living in north-east Kenya, Garowe reports. Human Rights Watch (HRW) released a report on Friday in which it says that from November 2011and March 2012, Kenyan police regularly arrested and mistreated Somalis living in refugee camps.

Somaliland to snub Turkey conference on Somalia

The self-declared state of Somaliland has ruled out attending a meeting in Turkey called to review progress over Somalia following the London conference in February.
The breakaway country’s foreign affairs minister Mohamed Abdullahi Omar said that the planned Istanbul conference in June did not concern it, despite Somaliland President Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud Silanyo having attended the London meeting.

Somalia’s Constituent Assembly conference has convened a series of meetings in Mogadishu, bringing together more than 100 traditional elders to decide the selection of the assembly that will adopt a constitution and a new parliament. Some analysts said elders from areas still under the control of al-Shabab and those clans supporting the group may elect members of parliament who favor the Islamist militant group.
Killers of Somali journalist must be brought to justice – UNESCO chief

7 May 2012 – The head of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) today called on authorities in Somalia to bring to justice those responsible for the murder of radio journalist Farhan James Abdulle.
Mr. Abdulle, 27, was shot dead on 2 May by unidentified gunmen in the village of Garsoor in Central Somalia. He was a reporter for the Galkayo branch of Radio Daljir, and the fifth journalist to be murdered in the Horn of Africa nation this year.
New pirate prison in Somalia aims to relieve international overload

It’s a significant change for countries combating piracy but are seeing their own jail systems overwhelmed as the U.S. and other countries continue to catch and turn over pirates to countries willing to prosecute them.

Somalia, the world’s most failed and least governed state, is incapable even of investing its own government with the powers and the authority it needs to distribute the aid that it gets from the international community. So it has little chance of protecting its people or fighting international crime. But up until some years ago, a very profitable part of the Somalian economy was coastal sea fishing. In this at least, Somalian coastal areas were a horn of plenty.
