UN rejects move to fund Kenyan Naval forces in Somalia

The United Nations Security Council on Wednesday shelved a request by the African Union for UN funding of Kenya’s naval forces operating off the coast of Somalia. “Three or four members” of the 15-nation Security Council blocked the effort to secure financial support for a Kenyan naval component of the AU military mission in Somalia, said Doctor Mashabane, South Africa’s deputy UN ambassador. France, one of the five veto-wielding members of the council, was identified in some reports as a leading opponent of the AU request.

Somalia: 30 MPs reject confidence vote for ‘incomplete Cabinet’

Thirty Members of Parliament (MP) in the Somali Federal Parliament have rejected Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon’s incomplete Cabinet of Ministers, Garowe Online reports. The 30 MPs wrote a statement to Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Osman Jawari to reject the incomplete list of Cabinet that was appointed on Monday. The letter stated that it was a violation of the Somali Federal Constitution for Parliament to take a vote of confidence on the incomplete list of Cabinet.


Allied forces seize al Shabaab’s weapons cache

A cache of firearms and ammunition thought to belong to al Shabaab militants has been recovered by Somali and African Union forces in the port city of Kismayo after carrying out a major joint operation to the west of the town. The weapons were found buried in a Muslim cemetery west of the town, according to area security committee official, Yasin Noor Gas. He said the haul including fifty AK47 riffles, several deadly general-purpose machine guns or PKM, pistols and rounds of ammunition was found in packed sacks buried in two separate sites within Jabarti Muslim cemetery.


AMISOM starts training courses for Somali soldiers in Beledweyne

The African Union Mission in Somalia known as (AMISOM) forces Started Training Course for the Somali soldiers in Beledweyne, a town located some 40 kilometers from the border with Ethiopia. The spokesman of Hiiraan region, central Somalia Mohamed Nur said Thursday the AU forces in the town of Beledweyne began to train the Somali National army (SNA) on improving their army skills.


Police arrest “killer soldier” in Beledweyne

Police in central Somali town of Beledweyne have arrested a soldier accused of killing a male laundry worker in the same town on Tuesday night. The soldier is said to be a former security detail of the former regional governor Yussuf Ahmed Hagar. Confirming the arrest, area police boss Col. Cali Abdi told Bar-kulan the officer will soon be arraigned in court to answer murder charges against him.

Summit to decide on Somalia bid to join regional bloc

East African presidents will decide whether Somalia’s battered economy will become part of the regional economic bloc when they meet in Nairobi later this month. The heads of state are also expected to approve a membership request forwarded by South Sudan last year. Of the criteria set for new members, the war-torn nation qualifies on grounds of sharing borders with a member state (Kenya) but scores low on human rights record and political stability.

EU naval force warns of piracy threats despite reduction off Horn of Africa

EU’s counter piracy mission (EU NAVFOR) off the coast of Somalia has warned of threat of piracy which it said still remains a threat despite attacks having declined off the Horn of Africa in the past year. EU NAVFOR’s Operation Commander Rear Admiral Potts warned yachting and leisure craft community to avoid transiting the High Risk Area – the southern Red Sea, Gulf of Aden and the Western part of the Indian Ocean.


Piracy fight: No letting up from Navy

South Africa will send anti-piracy patrols to the waters off Mozambique and Tanzania this month, a senior navy official said on Thursday, while warning of a resurgence in attacks if the continent’s oceans are not policed. “Piracy is not over,” said Rear Admiral Bernhard Teuteberg, director of maritime strategy for the South African Navy on the side-lines of a conference on African maritime security.
