Roadside bomb kills 2, injures 5 in Somalia’s port city of Kismayo

At least two people were killed and five others injured in a huge roadside bomb explosion inn Somalia’s southern port city of Kismayo, the latest in series of attacks against Somali and Kenyan forces, reports said. Tuesday’s attack took place at Alanley village, targeting Somali government forces as they were carrying out massive operations aimed to secure the city, after al Shabaab insurgents vacated.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud who is in Kampala to attend Uganda’s Golden Jubilee Independence celebrations has held talks with his Kenyan counterpart Mwai Kibaki as part of his efforts to meet world leaders attending the Jubilee fete in Kampala. During their meeting in Kampala, the two leaders discussed a range of issues including Kenyan military presence in Somalia and the need for Kenyan troops to secure Kismayo.

Elders complain about the commissioner of Bal’ad district

Elders from Bal’ad District in Middle Shabelle region in Southern of Somalia complained about the commissioner of Bal’ad district for Somalia’s government, as they claim he has been arresting elders aggressively in the district. The elders claim that the commissioner arrests elders who oppose his idea about the district.


Uganda marks its 50th Independence

A Somali Military Officer says a night-time curfew was imposed and came into effect over night in Somalia’s southern port city of Kismayo, a move that intended to stop bombings and insecurity acts since al Shabaab’s withdrawal early this month. Col. Mohamed Farah, who is a  military officer says  that government forces along with Raskamboni militia have arrested dozens of people who showed defiant over the curfew imposed the city.


Gov’t sets up interim admin for Kismayo

The government has established an interim local administration for the port city of Kismayo to replace ousted al Shabaab authority and fill the vacuum left after militants fled the city two weeks ago, officials say. Col. Adan Ibrahim Ilyas of the Somali National Army told Bar-kulan a 25 member administration has been set up to temporarily exert government authority in the area.


Blind Somali man graduates with Masters

Having a disability in Africa can limit the chances of receiving an education, however one Somali man has proved to his fellow countrymen that having a disability does not limit the mind’s capabilities. A blind Somali man, Mohamed Ahmed Mohamud, completed his Masters degree in African Studies from the International University of Africa in Khartoum the capital of Sudan. Mr. Mohamud, who was born blind in southern Somalia, came from a humble family. He was lucky enough to have received an education despite conflict in Somalia.

Kibaki seeks disarming, integration of surrendering al Shabaab

President Mwai Kibaki has called for the Demobilisation, Disarmament and Reintegration of the al Shabaab insurgents surrendering to the AMISOM forces. Speaking on Tuesday in Kampala, Uganda, when he held bilateral talks with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia, the Head of State noted that as part of the reconstruction of Somalia, there is need to take urgent measures to disarm those surrendering to avoid any regrouping.


KDF Somalia mandate

The chief of Kenya defence forces general Julius Karangi is calling on the new Somalia government to consolidate on the gains made by AMISOM troops in somalia and establish a long lasting administration. General karangi says though AMISOMs mandate in Somalia ends by month end, he expressed optimism that the u-n security council will extend the mandate to allow AMISOM troops engage in peace keeping as they pacify liberated areas.


Ex-Garissa chief cop reinstated

The former Garissa police chief Felix Jay Munyambu, who Internal Security minister Katoo ole Metito said had been sacked for allowing a terror suspect to enter Kenya from Somalia, has resumed work after close to two years. Munyambu was interdicted on July 2009 to pave way for investigations into claims of embezzlement of funds when he served as the Kiambu police commander. He was reinstated in 2011 and posted to Police Headquarters but was not assigned to any section.


Kenya’s military has proven its might in Somalia

Federal trial of Mahamud Said Omar enters second week

Testimony continues today from Salah Osman Ahmed, a 29-year-old New Brighton man who has admitted that he was “scared to death” when he arrived as a new recruit for al-Shabaab.

After years of transitional and ineffective administrations, Somalia’s new federal government has rekindled hope especially for any Somalian from my generation. All we have seen is Somalia in a limbo since 1991, with the world waiting and watching how much worse it could get for us. In what is a historical event, Somalia’s new federal parliament elected Hassan Sheikh Mohamud an academic and activist, to become the country’s next president. The defeat of Sharif Sheikh Ahmed who was leading the transitional government, in what was a tight competition; Somalis see a sign of changing times.
