Somalia facing aid shortfall after al Shabaab bans Islamic Relief

Just over a week after its fighters abandoned their last major stronghold in southern Somalia, al-Shabaab have banned Muslim aid group Islamic Relief from the territory it controls, threatening programmes for more than a million people in an area where food and water shortages are still critical a year after famine.

Al Shabaab flee from Buur-Hakabo town

Reports from the town of Buur-Hakabo say al Shabaab militants fled from the town before the Somali led African Union peacekeepers of AMISOM had arrived. Rumors vary over what prompted the millitants to flee but residents in the area says “they have seen militants fleeing from the city heading to Diinsoor and other towns in Bakool region”.


Blast hits the main market in Mogadishu

A hand-held grenade was hurled at a Security Checkpoint at a junction in Mogadishu’s Bakara Market. One soldier and one civilian have being killed and at least 10 other civilians sustained injuries from this explosion, as confirmed by the area commander, Mohamed Said Sokor. The perpetrators of this latest attack are said to have escaped unscathed.


UN officials visit floods hit Beledweyne town

A delegation of UN officials on Monday visited floods-hit Beledweyne town to assess the magnitude of the floods and the human suffering in the area following the floods. The officials from the UN OCHA, WFP, UNICEF and UNHCR held talks with area government officials and non-governmental organisations operating in the region.


Somalia’s government forces kill a suspected person

Somalia’s military forces based in Lower Shabelle region in Southern of Somalia are reported to have killed a civilian in that region. Our correspondent in Lower Shabelle reported that the forces killed a man at Baladogle Airport where Somalia’s Military forces are based. The officials of Somali military forces said the forces suspected the man of a suicide attack targeting them.


Ahlusunna to form autonomy state in central regions

The chairman of Ahlusunna Administrative departments Shiekh Ibrahim Gureye said they are planning to establish a regional administration in the Ahlusunna-administrated regions of central Somalia. Sheikh Gureye also noted that the plan proposed by the natives of Ahlusunna-administered regions said they are going to help and support to build regional autonomy for their regions.


Over 20 Somali teenagers escape from a prison in Libya

Reports from Tripoli the Libyan capital say that over 20 Somali teenagers escaped from a prison where they were been living in terrible conditions. The reports say the teenagers got a chance to make use of the guard forces of the prison and escaped as soon as possible as they could.

The ICO supports democratic transformation in Somalia

The Islamic Cooperation Organization (ICO)’s secretary-general, professor Ekmeleddin İhsanoÄŸlu emphasized the ICO’s support of democratic transformation in Somalia, the building of peace, stability and development in order to restore Somalia’s customary role in the Islamic family.
Professor OÄŸlu issued a statement on the occasion of his visit to the Somali capital, Mogadishu, in which he asserted the significance of the visit which constitutes a strong message of support to the new Somali leadership and to stability and peace in the embattled country which has been torn apart by more than two decades of civil war.

Kenya eyes Somalia peace dividend

Only stability will keep al-Qaeda groups out of Somalia and Libya

The evictions of Somalia’s al-Shabaab from its stronghold in Kismayo, and of Ansar al-Sharia from Benghazi in Libya are the latest successes in a concerted, US-driven effort to eradicate al-Qaida-related groups from the Middle East and Africa. But it is doubtful that this is the end of extremism in either location, or that force of arms will deliver long-lasting security solutions in the region.
