Somali president set to mark his first year in office

The UN-backed Somali Federal government led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is set to mark
its first year in office after president Hassan was elected as the first election to be held in Somali soil on10th September 2012. After elected, Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has set a number of points as key priority of his government which bases on good governance. Somali analysts have different points of view of his administration during the government first year in office; some say that president Mohamud has failed to deliver in his first year. The new government was the first to be given global recognition since the collapse of the hardline regime in 1991, and billions in foreign aid has been poured in.

Somali president receives Chinese delegation

Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud Tuesday received a Chinese delegation led by the Chinese ambassador to Kenya Liu Guangyuan in the Somali capital, Mogadishu. President has welcomed the historic bilateral ties between the two countries and recent agreement in which the Chinese government pledged to reconstruct the National Theatre, football stadium, Banadir hospital and major roads in many parts of the country. “I’m delighted to visit Mogadishu and meet the Somali president “, says Chinese ambassador to Kenya Liu Guangyuan.


Third session of Somalia Federal Parliament opens

The third session of Somalia Federal Parliament has opened in Mogadishu on Tuesday which has come the first anniversary of the election of the country’s president, RBC reports. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has addressed the opening ceremony of the parliament stating his leadership’s achievement in the past year. “Our main target is to reach one man one vote in the year 2016.” president Mohamud said. “There will no any extension after the end of my term” he added. President Mohamud also touched his government’s success towards national reconciliation as he also promised national rebuilding project in the country backed by foreign friends.

Al Shabaab militants target Federal Govt positions with mortar shells

Somalia’s Al Shabaab militants reportedly targeted Somali Federal Government forces positioned at Yaqshid and Huriwa bases on Monday night, Garowe Online reports. Following the hit-and-run attacks on the bases in Mogadishu, local reports say that both sides exchanged heavy artillery fire but no casualties were reported. Residents confirmed to GO that Al Shabaab militiamen simultaneously fired shells at a building housing the commissioner of Mogadishu’s Huriwa district Omar Abdulle Jacfan and former Mogadishu spaghetti factory in Yaqshid district.


Interior minister sacks regional police officers

Somalia Interior and national security ministry has sacked two regional police officers after failing ti secure the capital city, sources said. General Garad Nur who was the Head of Banadir regional police and General Abukar Ali Ahmed the commissioner of the police operations have been fired after Saturday’s suicide explosions killed more than 30 people in Mogadishu. Dalsan Radio attempts to contact the interior and national security ministry returned unanswered.


Famous Somali Artist woman returns back to Mogadishu after more than two decades

Famous Somali artist woman Hiba Mohamed Huddon (better known as Hiba Nura) has landed at Mogadishu airport on Tuesday making her first return to the home country fore than two decades, RBC reports. She was warmly received by Benadir regional administration officials, Members of the Federal Parliament of Somalia and members of the national artists and the music band. The spokesman of the Benadir regional administration Mohamed Yusuf said the visit by Hiba Nura to Mogadishu shows a sign of peace.

Tanzania Apprehends More Than 700 Illegal Immigrants

Tanzanian authorities have apprehended more than 700 illegal immigrants in Kagera region in an operation launched Friday, Tanzania’s Daily News reported. Kagera Regional Commissioner Colonel Fabian Massawe said security forces also seized two guns and 1,300 head of cattle in the operation. The immigrants are from Kenya, Somalia, Burundi, Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Massawe said. “It should be understood that we are not targeting one nation, but those who are in the country illegally,” he said. Massawe called on Kagera residents to collaborate with security officials during the operation.

Leicestershire fire engine donated to Somali capital

A fire engine has been donated to the Somali capital which only has three vehicles to serve a city of two and a half million people. Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service has provided an old engine, worth about £14,000, to the Mogadishu fire service. The city of Mogadishu is rebuilding its emergency services after two decades of civil war. Daran Farah, who works in the city mayor’s office, said the gift would “go a long way” for the city’s community. “It’s a city that hasn’t had any emergency service for the last 20 years and a modern fire engine will do a good thing for the people,” Mr. Farah said.


Al Shabaab back on Twitter

Somalia’s al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab insurgents returned to Twitter on Tuesday after their account last week was shut for a second time this year. The extremists, who are fighting the internationally-backed government in Mogadishu, sent an email message confirming that @HSM_Press was their new English-language account. It welcomed followers by accusing “disbelievers” of wanting to extinguish “Allah’s Light with their mouths”. Their previous account was closed after the group used the site to claim they had ambushed the convoy of Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. “Next time, you won’t be as lucky,” the Islamists tweeted after their attack, which the president escaped unharmed.

Challenges Facing Education in Somaliland

Ministry of Education in Somaliland runs an outdated educational system in which students are without specializations after leaving secondary school. On the other hand, education in Somaliland began from pre-colonial times and the growth of education continued unabated despite many impediments. Religious and non religious school system contributed positively to the growth and development of many aspects of healthy life. Moreover, school infrastructures were in short supply both in urban and rural areas as the majority of the current infrastructures were built at the time of British rule in Somaliland. The successive governments in the past failed to significantly expand school related infrastructures in response to the growing demand of the population.
