Somalia’s National Security Agency on Thursday put on show in Mogadishu at least 80 suspected al Shabaab members said to have been detained in an operation by government forces, officials said. Khalif Ahmed Eric, chief of Somali security forces in Benadir region, told reporters in Mogadishu that the alleged men were arrested in the latest Mogadishu crackdown and that most of them had confessed al Shabaab allegiance.
10 militants handed jail terms in Baidoa

A regional court in Baidoa has sentenced ten al Shabaab members to jail terms ranging from eight to seven years after they were found guilty of the charges against them. The accused were reportedly arrested in a crackdown targeting militants and their sympathizers and several neighbourhoods of the city. Speaking to journalists, regional police boss Mahad Abdirahman said the suspects were sentenced after the prosecution side tabled concrete evidence against the accused.
Deadly grenade attack in Somali capital

A deadly grenade attack occurred on Wednesday in Mogadishu, the latest in a string of grenade blasts in the city since al Shabaab’s withdrawal in August 6, 2011. Eyewitnesses told Shabelle Media Network that an unknown attacker has hurled a hand grenade on a military vehicle carrying Somali government forces at Km4 junction, a busy street in Somalia’s war-ravaged capital, causing unconfirmed casualties.

Kenyan vice president urges China to help restore Somalia

Egyptian president Morsy offers to train Somali army

President Mohamed Morsy said Egypt could train the Somali army and coast guards in a speech at a United Nations summit on Somalia, Wednesday. Morsy asserted Egypt’s “full support for Somalia in all fields and its continuous contribution towards human development.” He added Egypt is willing to train members of the Somali army, as well as coast guards, and welcomes “concerned international parties to participate in this.”
