American Jihadist Omar Hammami ‘defects’ from al Shabaab

Omar Hammami, an Alabama native who traveled to Somalia in 2006 to join the al Shabaab militant group, has on Tuesday announced to have defected from the group and Al-Qaeda as well, though he still sees himself as a terrorist. In an exclusive telephone interview with VOA Somali service, he said that he completely cut ties with al Shabaab leader, Mukhtar Abu Zubayr (Ahmed Godane), whom he accused of being behind an assassination attempt on his life. Omar Hammami who also uses the name Abu Mansour al-Amriki (“the American”) said he was hiding in parts of Bay and Bakol region in southern Somalia. He accused Ahmed Godane’s faction of killing a person who ‘offered shelter’ to two of his wives.

Dozens of al Shabaab suspects arrested in Afgoye town

Somali government forces on Tuesday arrested dozens of al Shabaab suspects in Afgoye town, Lower Shabelle region of Somalia. The security forces launched a massive search out operation in a bid to secure the town of Afgoye where the officials said they have found intelligence information about al Shabaab suspects hiding there. According to local journalists, the security forces have taken dozens of young men into custody for interrogation. The Afgoye district administration and the security officials could not be reached for comment The operation came as Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was paying a visit to the region.

Government official killed in Afmadow

Qadar Haji Abdullahi, a government official who was based in Afmadow town located in the lower Jubba region of Somalia has been killed by al Shabaab fighters. The news has been confirmed by Qorane Ibrahi Ismail who is a freelance journalist operating in the lower Jubba region of Somalia. Qorane was captured by al Shabaab fighters while he was supervising an area where locals gather to fetch water from. His throat was separated from the rest of his body according to the journalist who was at the site. Tensions are high in Shabah village located in Afmadow district following the incident. Al Shabaab fighters and government troops aided by the Kenyan troops frequently fight in the region.


Fire razes Mogadishu petrol station

Reports from Mogadishu indicate that a huge fire has gutted a petrol station in Hodan district’s Sia Biyano neighborhood. Even though the cause of the fire remains vague, locals told Bar-kulan that a man is believed to have opened fire in the petrol station. Reports add that Banaadir region firefighters failed to put off the fire which rapidly spread to other Mogadishu neighborhoods. Property has also been reportedly lost as a result of fire that razed the petrol station.


Puntland condemns terrorist attack on Somalia President’s Convoy

Puntland Government strongly condemns September 3 terrorist attack on the convoy of Somali President H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, as the convoy traveled by road from Mogadishu to Merka. The people and Government of Puntland send condolences to the Somali Federal Government and the families of victims killed in this heinous and ruthless attack by al Shabaab. This attack is another attempt by terrorists to undermine peace and stability in Somalia by attacking the leaders.


Somaliland Foreign Minister heads to UAE to attend international gathering on piracy issues

Mohamed Biihi Yoonis, Somaliland Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation travelled to UAEon Monday where he will attend a meeting that will focus on issues concerning piracy. The conference is organized by the United Nations with the help of the African Union and IGAD’S regional body.

Ethiopian Foreign Minister Dr. Tedros Adhanom met with the President of the Puntland Administration, Abdirahman Mohamud Farole, for a working dinner on September 2, 2013. President Farole thanked Dr. Tedros for the commitment and dedication he had shown in the negotiation process which led to the breakthrough of the recent signing of the Agreement between the Juba Interim Administration and the Somali Federal Government in Addis Ababa. Dr. Tedros, who detailed the week-long negotiations, underlined the point that the amount of common ground had translated into positive elements that helped to resolve differences and forge an agreement.

UN expert hails human rights effort but urges broader consultation process

An independent United Nations expert today hailed the approval by Somalia of a “road map” to help promote and protect human rights in the country, but urged the Government to consult more with civil society and regional administrations before the document is finalized. “I welcome the endorsement of the post-transition Human Rights Roadmap as a very positive step for the advancement of human rights in Somalia, but unless there is wide ownership by all concerned, implementation of the Roadmap will be very difficult,” said the UN Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in Somalia, Shamsul Bari.


Acute malnutrition persists in Somalia while 870,000 people remain food insecure

The number of people in crisis in Somalia is at its lowest since famine was declared in Somalia in 2011, thanks to successive seasons of average to above average rainfall, low food prices and sustained humanitarian response but acute malnutrition continues to pose a threat to hundreds of thousands of children especially in the country’s south, latest findings indicate.

Somaliland: The Causes of new problems from the youth

Luck of recreation centers of New Hargiesa villages caused the youth to happen different bad behaviors. A research which did the Horn research organization presented that there is no football, basketball, running areas and youth centers.
There is facts which research showed, more than 350,000 persons live in New Hargiesa village, 70 % of people are youth both male and female. In this village the majority of that percentage are male.
The school hours of the country are only four or five hours a day, 8 to 12 pm they are in schools, 1 to 4 in home for launching and reading. The remaining four or six hours plus the holidays are unoccupied of youngsters, this caused to happen the teenagers different terrible actions like drag( chat, cigarettes, alcohol and etc).
They created gangs or bunch of criminal that lift mobiles, money, rap and some times killing the people.
